Yes, this means my website has also moved to yakumo.dev.. I've updated my Misskey profile to reflect this.

And yes this also means the future of #Makai as a #Misskey instance is not yet certain beyond March 2025 (which is why I published that announcement reminding users here to backup).. Neither I nor @[email protected] really own the domain (that one goes to @[email protected]), so if we don't get the renewal for chaotic.ninja (costing 35 euros) done by at least February (I would want at least a month worth of time for everyone to migrate if it comes to that), I will be forced to close down this server due to how fediverse software works (it doesn't allow cleanly migrating everything over a new domain name). Maybe I will spin up another Misskey under yakumo.dev, but by then it's pretty much a new server from scratch. ​:seija_coffee:​

I've decided not to upgrade #Makai to #Misskey 2024.5.0 yet. I'm not sure why but every time I load a 2024.5.0 instance (like misskey.io or misskey.systems) my whole browser (#Floorp which is #Firefox ESR 115) hangs really hard for some seconds. I'm not confident in the stability of this new version.

I will however be cherry-picking the security fix included in the new version.

I'm gonna wait for master branch to reflect 2024.5.0 first before upgrading #Makai to the latest #Misskey. ​:seija_coffee:​

#Makai is no longer being served by #GCore #CDN. This was done because it's becoming too unstable (we're getting too many 504s from the CDN itself). I already know that it isn't particularly reliable due to the "connection was lost" dialog appearing too frequently (probably some faulty #WebSockets proxy implementation on their end), but I thought it will just be that. I also never got the supposed Philippines edge they have (I always get connected to either Hong Kong or Singapore which is around 20ms), but that's more of a me problem. ​:TenshMelt:​

So yeah if you're a Makai user reading this post, you're directly connected to the VPS hosting this #Misskey instance now. Apologies if this means higher latency for you, but I don't see any other way. ​:AliceBeg:​ BunnyCDN doesn't support WebSockets, GCore is unreliable, and I refuse to use Cloudflare.

Since we've ditched the slow #reverseproxy in our FreeBSD server for serving #Makai's #Misskey frontend, I've also decided to proxy and cache remote media so that each user here doesn't have to request media directly from the remote instance (which is bad practice for multi-user instances). ​:yumemi_tea:​

Hmm for some reason my mobile #ISP is blocking #Makai's #CDN directly. Not the CDN's website; the direct CDN URL used for CNAME itself.

If I wasn't scratching my head figuring whether it's my fault or not I would've posted this #Chowking #Halohalo I had as a #snack earlier. Oh well, I'm on a #proxy right now just for this Misskey (and thank god I cared to create a #squid proxy on my Philippine #VPS, so less latency punishment)... ​:tewi_unamused:​

We have now moved to #Gcore's #CDN. As you can see auto-updates now work again in #Makai while still being a blazing fast #Misskey, and it's all because of this move to a CDN that supports #WebSockets! ​:cirno_thumbs_up:​

That does mean we are no longer in #BunnyCDN, which is a shame because bnuuy ​:fumoreisen:​ and also they're a lot simpler to use and read their ToS.. ​:satsuki_sadge:​

#Makai's #Misskey frontend is now being served by #BunnyCDN! This should hopefully make this site a lot faster for you whereever you are. ​:reisen_overdrive:​

You may have to do a flush of your Misskey client at https://makai.chaotic.ninja/flush (it will log you out), or even a full clearing of all cookies and site data associated with makai.chaotic.ninja. I recommend doing so if you're noticing any weirdness with the avatars.

Currently there's one known issue in this move to a #CDN: link previews don't work properly (but clicking on them should still bring you to the right URL). I'm investigating on how to get that fixed.

(And before you ask, yes I've already made sure to comment-out the X-Real-IP, X-Forwarded-For, and X-Forwarded-Proto headers in the origin's #nginx config. That didn't even fix the avatars being displayed wrongly actually, I had to make an edge rule to force cache time for */proxy/* to 0.) ​:reisen_dance2:​
