  1. ✨Detail from the Tomb of the Diver✨

Just south of Paestum, the Tomb of the Diver was discovered during excavation work in 1968. The ceiling of the tomb was painted with a scene of a man diving into the water, an unusual scene in a burial context. The simplicity of the fresco style draws the eye to the subject. The tomb itself is thought to date to c. 500–475 BCE.

The Tomb of the Diver continues to generate scholarly interest on account of which culture it should be best attributed to. The wall frescoes focus on symposium revealing a Greek influence, while the style is suggestive of a local Italic approach to artistry. Paestum was part of Magna Graecia so these dual influences are to be expected and perhaps can’t be disentangled.

  2. It's the Day of Hermes aka Mercurius Day aka #Wednesday! 🐏

This cup of #Hermes and a dog was made as a pair, the other depiting Apollon. The delicately painted seated #Hermes adorns the center of the cup, feeding or playfully teasing the hound reclining at his side.
