  7. They Didn't Believe Me, (Kern-Reynolds), sung by Tony Bennett
This is widely regarded as the first popular song of the modern era, and the song that marked the beginning of the Great American Songbook. Introduced in 1914, They Didn't Believe Me, marked a decisive break from both the waltz rhythms and the schmaltzy romantic lyrics that were so characteristic of music at that point. Here was something fresh and new, with its use of everyday language, and it proved enormously popular. Music was never the same after this song. It certainly had an impact!

There have been many versions of the song. Tony Bennett, here with pianist Bill Charlap, gives it a soft, mellow, jazz rendition. Perfect for this hour of the evening.

And when I told them how beautiful you are
They didn't believe me, they didn't believe me
Your lips, your eyes, your cheeks, your hair
Are in a class beyond compare
You're the loveliest girl that one could see🎵

  23. 3/3 orchestral pieces we played at #Cowley #Orchestra this Wednesday: This week's musical was #Showboat by #JeromeKern - also a favourite we play around once per term. There are five selections left which we didn't get round to this week. Next week the conductors are back in charge but maybe they'll take on one of my leftovers in which case I'll highlight thoses as well. youtube.com/watch?v=gaMtmxVs1V #Oxford

  30. They Didn't Believe Me, by Jerome Kern, 1914. Widely regarded as the song that heralded the era of the Great American Song Book. Its innovations included using four beats to the bar, rather than the customary waltz-rhythms, as well as everyday language rather than flowery, more operatic language from Europe. Popular music in America would never be the same. This lovely version is by Julie London.
