What a treat to see Ernst Lubitsch’s TO BE OR NOT TO BE (1942) w/ Jack Benny and Carole Lombard on 35mm at Film at Lincoln Center today.
Big laughs in all the right places, especially for Sig Ruman as "Concentration Camp Ehrhardt." My faith in humanity is restored!
Benny was a fav of my father, so seeing this today was special.

The third of four episodes of Jack Benny’s first season on TV. I haven’t yet been able to find out how to watch it these days, alas!

Gail Patrick, Jack Benny and Ida Lupino in the Paramount musical comedy “Artists and Models” (1939). Directed by Raoul Walsh.

It takes reading a book about Jack Benny’s radio show to find out about these two movies that helped turn Eddie “Rochester” Anderson into a big star:
“Man About Town” (1939) and “Buck Benny Rides Again” (1940)
In that era, if a black actor is billed at all on a poster, he or she had to pretty much have one of the leading roles. I’ll have to track these pictures down.

After reading both of Fred Allen’s books and a book about Ed Gardner’s “Duffy’s Tavern” earlier this year, it seems appropriate to keep up the radio comedy theme and try a book on Jack Benny.

After seeing Ann Sheridan mostly wasted in “Navy Blues” (1941), I decided it was a good time to re-visit one of the too few films where she gets to showcase her abilities, “George Washington Slept Here” (1942) with Jack Benny.

Jack Benny, Richard Arlen and Ida Lupino in “Artists and Models” (1937). Ida plays a model in this and it’s fun to notice the photo Arlen is holding is a glamour portrait of Ida from the previous year’s “Your for the Asking”

Happy #JackBenny's Birthday! He was born Benny Kubelsky on Valentine's Day, 1894. Kathryn H. Fuller-Seeley says, in her book about Benny's radio career, that Benny's humor
"...stemmed from character, embedded in a narrative, in countless stories of a foolish man’s humiliation, enriched by the actors’ voices, tone, and timing, with radio comedy’s richness captivating the ears and imaginations of its listeners."

I have a 45-minute commute to work, and for many years now I've spent a lot of that time listening to old-time #radio (#OTR) shows, from the 30s, 40s, and 50s. The @internetarchive has a huge collection of these. I've recently started re-listening to one of my favorites: The #JackBenny show:
