  1. Claudette Colbert in “The Palm Beach Story” (1942). She passed away at age 96 on this day in 1996 after a 60+yr career of nearly 80 films and approximately 2 dozen theater roles. She was an 1989 Kennedy Center honoree (youtu.be/Pg8f-qYVe0Q?si=08YPAJ)

  4. One of my favorite movies, Midnight (1939), is currently on the Criterion Channel.

It’s a fun take in the Cinderella story, with delightful performances by the legendary John Barrymore, a young Don Ameche, and academy award winning actress Claudette Colbert.

It’s absolutely worth a watch if you have access to it.

  14. “CLAUDETTE COLBERT didn’t intend to be an actress. She wanted to be an artist. Then, quite by chance, she got a small part in a Broadway play—and the theater wouldn't let her go.… Her latest picture is ‘Torch Singer.’” Photo by Will Walling Jr. — Photoplay, Nov. 1933

  15. Apparently even Claudette Colbert could not escape the western craze of the 1950s. “Texas Lady” (1955) was her penultimate film. Not one I’ve seen yet.

  16. Claudette Colbert in “Zaza” (1938)

Director George Cukor: “It was a story of adultery, and after we finished the picture it got an absolute turndown by the Hays Office.”

  26. Torch Singer (1933), a pre-code melodrama. A singing star searches for her lost daughter. A bit sentimental for my tastes but Claudette Colbert makes anything worth seeing (and she wears some stunning gowns). In its own way it's quite pre-code.

  27. After the finishing the excellent but rather intense Apu Trilogy, my wife and I decided to unwind with a #screwballcomedy--#MitchellLeisen's 1939 film "Midnight."

#ClaudetteColbert is a down-and-out chorus girl who passes herself off as Madame Czerny as she works her way up the Paris social ladder. #DonAmeche is her Hungarian taxi driver/co-conspirator.

It's a #BillyWilder script, so this should be a lot of fun.

  28. Mitchell Leisen's #Midnight (1939) is a delightful screwball comedy w/ a razor-sharp script by #BillyWilder and #CharlesBrackett.

But it must be said — #ClaudetteColbert has better, more genuine chemistry w/ #JohnBarrymore than with either of the handsome young men she's paired with (#DonAmeche and #FrancisLederer).

It's streaming on Criterion Channel. Watch it and let me know if you agree or disagree!
