  1. I operated my business profitably for about 8 years before I finally said, "Hmmm, looks like I'm not going back to being an employee, so I guess I should form an LLC."

When you're just starting out with a new biz idea, don't sweat all the details.

    Just create something that sells.

  2. Just be 10x better, right?

Of course, that’s easier said than done.

If there is a market leader with a well-established product and a large customer base, good luck being 10x better than them!

    However, you can be different.

    You can be unique.

  3. When should you talk openly about the business you’re building, and when should you keep quiet about it?

Several entrepreneurs promote the benefits of “building in public.”

While I agree with the premise of sharing your journey, there are times when it’s a bad idea to build in public.

More about that in this article…

  4. It's not always a good idea to build in public.

I'm going to discuss this in my Solopreneur newsletter tomorrow. Subscribe if you want it in your inbox.

  5. A surprising number of people think happiness means never working again and "taking a vacation" for the rest of your life. I have several friends who dream of the day when they can fully retire.

Let me tell ya, that gets really boring, really fast.

    Been there. Did that.

Part of me felt like I didn’t enjoy working anymore. Maybe I hated work? Maybe I just didn’t want to work hard on anything at all.

    I was wrong.

  6. "My father could have been a great comedian… Instead he got a safe job as an accountant. All of that fell apart when my dad lost his job and the family fell on hard times. I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you can fail at what you don't want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love."

  7. In tomorrow's newsletter, I'm going to talk about why it's better to bet on yourself than to leave your fate in someone else's hands.

  8. "As people live longer, healthier lives, the traditional 40-year career will become a thing of the past. But that’s going to require a new mindset — and a lot more planning."

I often say that I’m planning on working in some capacity until the day I die.

Once you’re doing something you love, you kind of don’t want to stop anyway!

  9. If you're a solopreneur (or entrepreneur), you might be leaving one of your best perks on the table.

    I used to!

I talk more about this wonderful benefit in my newsletter tomorrow. Subscribe to get it in your inbox.

  10. As a #solopreneur, I love blending work and play throughout my day.

For example, I go skiing for a couple of hours, take a break and write on my IPad for an hour, ski some more, take a break and respond to emails and messages, and so on.

Beats the heck out of being locked up in a corporate office and working for 8-12 hrs straight (like I used to do)!

I don't mind blending work and life when I'm in control of how and when I do it.

  11. Every employer wastes your time sooner or later.

In small ways (e.g., pointless #meetings), and often in huge ways (e.g., multi-year initiatives that suddenly get canceled).

Your #life is too short to let someone else waste it.

If you're tired of working for someone who wastes your time, it's time to plan your break for #freedom.

    Maybe not today.

    Maybe not tomorrow.

    But don't wait too long…

  12. Don't treat your life like an afterthought by squeezing it into the margins of time around your job.

Instead, design your work around your ideal life.
