One call and two appointments today including blood work the tech was nice and showed me pics of her two senior French bulldogs and her boyfriend's brand new adopted puppies and just before leaving for the blood work appointment I got an email saying I was late paying home insurance and I realized it was b/c I mixed up the dates with my car permit payment b/c provincial budget cuts that will put me out of work unless I can conjure a fundraising miracle landed right in the middle of everything anyway here is a picture of a cat and have I mentioned I have a neurodivergent brain?
Yeah. It's SO much fun.

I had a whole pithy mini-essay planned on LLMs, the "AI" scam that is attempting to build the ultimate dystopia, the companies pushing it, the workers and citizens who are its victims, and what it means for society as a whole.
Presentation was to be a "future history"-type approach, which I've always had a soft spot for in sci-fi.
And ... I just can't. Trump today decided that not only was driving the world's largest economy off a cliff the prudent thing to do, merely crashing it wasn't enough, so he decided to fill the backseat with lit sticks of TNT, and stick a lit rag in the fuel filler.
The streets tomorrow will be (only metaphorically, with luck) running with blood. People everywhere are going to be hurt, some devastatingly so.
I wonder if this is the kind of thing that Charles Stross means when he talks about the world stopping him from writing or finishing something he'd been planning on. It feels awful.

Holiday schedule overload remains an effective way to keep holiday spending in check
At least 300 messages with “Black Friday” or “Cyber Monday” somewhere in their content have hit my Gmail inbox over the last 10 days. That should have meant I’ve gotten a vast amount of holiday shopping done, but instead I have a handful of abandoned online shopping carts in which the prices of most items have increased over the last few days.
Retailers in the U.S. deciding to barrage their customers with quickly-expiring promotions on this weekend must work for most of them, but in my case it always leaves me feeling overwhelmed, probably more so than it did a decade ago. There are only so many e-mails I can deal with in a day, and spending the last 10 years overindexing on social media cannot have helped my ability to balance cognitive load.
Plus, this time of year already has me feeling beseiged by CES PR pitches–and yes, of course I am going to CES in January because I’ve done that every January the show has happened IRL since 1998, but thanks for asking once again.
(As for the charities behind all of the “Giving Tuesday” pitches: Stop it already. Please move that effort to the Tuesday after Christmas, when those donations will land on credit-card bills a month after the costs of the holiday-shopping binge.)
This year, I’ve also had two longer-form projects spilling over into my schedule weeks after I should have completed them or at least pushed them far enough along to send out invoices. I got one past the copy-filed milestone Thursday, while another remains in a high-maintenance stage of editorial interaction. I don’t see how both won’t occupy much of my short-attention-span attention over the next two weeks.
And that’s why this is yet another December where I belatedly realize that I should have set my deadline to finish holiday shopping much earlier. Like sometime in August.

So ... one might think that the way to keep a keyboard from trying to choose from amongst several possible language options would be to assign it one and only one option.
One would be wrong.
Solution for a Samsung Android v 5 device
(Given that no two Android device interfaces are the same, Your Mileage Will Fucking Vary. This works for me, for now.)
Settings -> Language and Input -> Physical Keyboard (select your keyboard's description) > Set Keyboard Type
Ensure that NO LANGUAGES ARE SELECTED. Then back out of settings.
Typing
