When I edit my books, hyphenations are checked, listed, and flagged as valid (or not) by my #LuaLaTeX package "lua-list-hyphen" [https://ctan.org/pkg/lua-list-hyphen].
Attached is an example of the draft layout with supplementary data I use when I am working on ‘An Annotated Mathematician’s Apology’ [https://archive.org/details/hardy_annotated].
The actual page is shown in the frame, with the status flags next to each hyphenation. Above is the version and git commit the PDF was compiled from. To the right is a list of the various index entries that point to this page.

Another nice example of different hyphenation because of meaning+pronunciation in UK English:
• des-ert (noun: arid region; verb: abandon)
• de-sert (noun: comeuppance)
(The latter is mostly used in the plural ‘just de-serts’.)
I think this is noteworthy because — unlike other examples I know — the hyphenation changes even when the part of speech (noun) remains the same.

It is somehow pleasing that both "minute" and "second" are among those few words that hyphenate differently (at least in British English) depending on their meanings:
• mi-nute (tiny) / min-ute (60 sec-onds)
• se-cond (transfer temporarily) / sec-ond (1/60 of a min-ute, number two in a series)

Used to German (knowing a bit of Latin and Greek), I found English #hyphenation always strange.
TIL “in UK English ‘present’ hyphenates differently as a verb vs adj./noun” – WTF??

My #LuaLaTeX package "lua-list-hyphen" [https://ctan.org/pkg/lua-list-hyphen] has just been updated, and its name is now partly an artefact. :-)
It can now check each hyphenation in the document against a user-specified dictionary of valid divisions (or allowlist) and so list and/or visually flag either all of them or only those that do not match the dictionary. (And it handles multi-language documents.)
Attached is an example from the docs — a passage from Gibbon's ‘Decline and Fall’ set in narrow columns, with each hyphenation flagged as valid, invalid, ambiguous (in UK English ‘present’ hyphenates differently as a verb vs adj./noun), or unknown (the name ‘Vespasian’ isn't in the dictionary).

"hyphenassist" [https://codeberg.org/ajcain/hyphenassist] is a utility I wrote to aid checking hyphenation in (Lua)LaTeX documents.
It reads a list of hyphenations appearing in a document, generated by a package like my own "lua-list-hyphen" [https://ctan.org/pkg/lua-list-hyphen] or the older "lua-check-hyphen" [https://ctan.org/pkg/lua-check-hyphen]. It compares them to a division dictionary, flags each hyphenation as valid, invalid, unknown, or ambiguous (like re-cord (verb) vs rec-ord (noun)), and allows the user to add entries to the division dictionary, add TeX hyphenation exceptions, or ignore certain hyphenations.
It is a console app, keyboard-driven with Emacs-style keybindings, written in Python using the urwid library.

I have uploaded a new version of my book ‘Form & Number: A History of Mathematical Beauty’ [https://archive.org/details/cain_formandnumber_ebook_large] to archive.org.
The PDF of the new version is available immediately, and archive.org will re-generate the pages for the in-browser reader over the next few hours.
Changes:
• Improvements to several figures.
• Various small improvements to the text.
• Several minor corrections, including a number of reader-submitted ones.
• All end-of-line word hyphenations now follow the Oxford University Press standard. (The TeX/LaTeX #hyphenation algorithm does a good job, but is not perfect.)
• Many previously-bad page breaks have been adjusted. -

#TUG2024 day 3 starts with the status update by Ondřej Sojka about his work on expanding the #hyphenation patterns across Slavic languages.
They use #MachineLearning to compare existing patterns to find out if they can be used or adapted to other Slavic languages. This work is not only to be used within #TeX / #TeXLaTeX of course and is (or will be) implemented e.g. in browsers or smartphone operating systems.

Just found out how to fix #hyphenation not working in #Scribus on #Fedora #Linux (probably for #languages that aren't system language).
Check that the text frame, character and paragraph styles are all the correct language (in my case German on an English system). If Extras > Hyphenate Text still isn't working, go to Windows > Resources > Hyphenation Dictionaries and check that you have the correct .dics installed (for me it was only English).
Tadaa 🎉

Not just unfortunate #typography with disturbing #hyphenation, but it's ETCHED IN STONE!

Okay, who decided co-ordinate should be hyphenated and cooperate shouldn't? #hyphenation #spelling #English

This instant classic by @Richr is still the best post about #hyphenation on the Web IMHO. 👏
And Richard updated it in January!

nice....
just learnt that that a pure #Python module for #Hyphenation exists:
pip install pyphen
https://pyphen.org/
https://github.com/Kozea/PyphenNow part of my new pinetradio (Raspberry-Pi-Internetradio). Useful to show the ICY-Metadata on a small 240x240 display with maximal font size.

I had forgotten how much time cross-browser compatibility research takes. I now spent about 6 hours on #hyphenation in three browsers and four languages.
-
And Firefox doesn't hyphenate ALL-CAPS words in any language, but this is clearly a bug.
Yesterday I looked at three Dutch hyphenation rules lists, and I even called a Dutch language help line I didn't know existed, but it is categorically allowed in Dutch, and Firefox is doing it wrong. I suspect the same is true for German and French.
-
Then the only outstanding #css #hyphenation question is why English ALL-CAPS words aren't hyphenated in any browser.
Is there a rule for this in English hyphenation? If so, what do you do with acronyms such as UNICEF?
-
Interesting. My Edge/Windows does not have a Dutch dictionary, while Chrome on the same system does. So dictionaries are now proven to be applied on a per-browser basis, and not a per-system one.
Also, why does a Dutch-language Edge lack the Dutch dictionary?
