  3. The Secret Salon

The late 19th century was marked by Historicism, Academicism, and the rise of Symbolism. While traditional art dominated, LGBT artists found freedom in secret salons to explore their sexuality and art. These gatherings offered intimacy and sensuality, inspiring art and paving the way for modernism.

  4. "By #historicism I mean the doctrine that there is no relation of "closeness of fit" between language and the world: no image of the world projected by language is more or less representative of the way the world really is than any other."

This is from #Rorty. I have to say, I do not grasp the basis for defining the specific term "historicism" in this way. It seems rather to beg the question.

@ironick17 or anyone else, any illumination?

  10. Listening to an album of classic #Xmas music and trying to explain why this genre feels so profoundly insincere. I take the #structuralist angle (it's about the lies we tell to children) but @ecourtem parries with #historicism (the Sinatra/Martin #1950s were an era of public vice).

  12. CW: Intemperate Post — Fediverse Comprehension

What is obvious with hindsight is for many less so in the moment, and generalising from a specific is something with which people often struggle.

Meaning, comparisons between #email and the #Fediverse, and the mocking of those who do not see the parallels, is not as clever as it seems. Because it is mere presentism, a crime against #historicism, and no more insightful than abject triumphalism because you happened to get to the understanding first. /rant
