1. What's still *not* working perfectly is multimonitor handling (with a different ICC profile for each monitor). #Rawtherapee kind of handles that by offering an always-visible ICC profile select field. Other applications, like #digiKam, #nomacs and #Gwenview, are color managed but (at least on Ubuntu 24 with X11) either (1) always use the primary display's ICC profile or (2) require diving in the menus to set it.

The standard simple image viewer is #gwenView.

The image found at @scriptkiddie's that you see in this Screenshot taken by #specTacle, the screen tackler that comes with the bundle, has been resized from 1536x1024px to 640x360px and became converted to .webp with #GIMP to get a glimpse on how this format might look on #mastodon, as over here on #friendica we, or at least some to most of us, live more like in a quiet desktop world.

As friendica allows since [2024.12] the use of .webp for the standard stream distribution, it's highly recommended to use that format, it saves a lot of transmission energy, as well as storage space and their for #carbonCredits on every #climateFront.

To see how it really looks like, the actual 99,6 KB image comes in a follow up to this post and will be published as a

'ed and 'ed image.

11. Testing out #Nix on #SteamOS/#SteamDeck, and so far so good! It's been helpful in getting any of the missing non-graphical packages I need, such as to install and get my #KDE/#Dolphin service menu working (https://github.com/irfanhakim-as/kde-service-menu-reimage) - where I needed a couple of missing deps like #ImageMagick and #Exiftool.

Most of the graphical apps I need are easily found/installable on
#Flatpak though, except something like #Alacritty. I previously installed it on this system using #Distrobox and it worked great, I thought to test installing a graphical app off of Nix - but it doesn't seem that worked with Alacritty. From my search it's something to do with GL/Vulkan apps outside of #NixOS or something of the like. There were also some apps that aren't available as Flatpaks, are available on #ArchLinux 's #AUR, but aren't available on Nix.

There will also be things that don't work too, I think for reasons that may be obvious to others, such as adding HEIC support to KDE apps like Dolphin (for previews) and
#Gwenview (for image viewing). On a 'normal' Linux system, this is done by installing libheif and kimageformats (pretty sure u need both). Installing them on this SteamOS machine tho off of Nix, doesn't really help the system's Dolphin and Gwenview app to be able to serve/open HEIC files.

Still, I know I'm just barely scratching the surface of what I could do with Nix - even as just a 'package manager'. I understand why maybe
#Valve is holding themselves back from pre-installing Nix for now tho (unlike something like #Podman or #Distrobox, which they were surprisingly - in a good way, happy to do) bcos the situation with the Nix project, atm, is a lil confusing.. but as recommended by others on here, I think I'm having a good luck/time with the #Lix project's 'flavour' of Nix.

12. Something that #Okular does that I FREAKING LOVE 💌 is having the
`File -> Open Containing Folder`
menu option.

Absolute gold, @tsdgeos and team. I'd **love** that in many others like #Krita, #Gwenview... and thousands of non-KDE apps too!

It is very very useful, even if hidden in a menu. Makes it very easy to find related stuff... or simply just to find wherever you put that in.

13. I've installed the old #Oxygen style on #bazzite via rpm-ostree:

rpm-ostree install oxygen-cursor-themes oxygen-sounds plasma-oxygen-qt5 plasma-oxygen-qt6 oxygen-fonts oxygen-icon-theme oxygen-mono-fonts oxygen-sans-fonts plasma-oxygen

It's way better to use then Breeze for #touchscreens - i also use it on #SteamOS on my #SteamDeck

I also switched for #konsole, #okular and #gwenview to #Fedora packages. This works much better for remote volumes than the #flatpak versions:

flatpak remove okular gwenview konsole; rpm-ostree install okular gwenview konsole

14. Wednesday morning was going great until I realized I don't actually have a project ready to go today. But, if you don't mind the delay, I shall be starting in ~45 minutes (around 8:30 UTC), with some issues on #KDE #Gwenview to fix—and you are more than welcome to join my stream! (:

15. @razze Can #Gwenview display them? I think so?

Also have you tried #imagemagick or #graphicsmagick? There might even be a #KDE Context menu entry to batch convert them.

Gwenview can even display Sony RAW images.

21. So many #KDE applications work great on Windows, it’s ridiculous. #Krita? #KateEditor? #Kdenlive? Awesome! #KDEConnect? Chef’s kiss!

Kind of sad that there are no versions of #KTorrent or #Gwenview.

So, yeah, what’s my operating system? #Firefox.
No, but really? KDE and #Nushell.
Stop it, be serious, what’s underneath?! Who cares.

22. Adopted 3 KDE Applications today, because I use them every single day and they didn't get all the love they deserve: #Kwrite, #Ark and #Gwenview! #KDE #fundraiser #donation

23. I'm looking for a :linux: #Linux image viewer that maintains the zoom level and region while skipping through a glob of images with the arrow or PgUp/PgDown keys.

I have tried (on :nixos: #NixOS):

#ristretto
#gthumb
#viewnior
#geeqie
#qview (broken)
🫤 #sxiv (works in slideshow mode, resest zoom when skipping manually 🙄)
#gwenview (+changed settings&keybindings)
#feh --keep-zoom-vp works

28. I know #KDE #Dolphin is pretty dumb to not know how to react or what to do when a (remote) drive that should be mounted (via #fstab) is inaccessible (i.e. I shut down the Samba server or am on a different network) and hangs itself, but today I realise Dolphin's stupidity isn't alone.

KDE's photo viewer,
#Gwenview too crashes itself each time you wish to open an image. Even though that image file has nothing to do with that drive that is now non-existent/inaccessible. You gotta unmount said drive first, then Dolphin and Gwenview will behave "as intended". Geez.

29. @paco For image management maybe look at something like #darktable, #rawtherapee, or #digikam? Maybe even #krita?

#Apple #Preview is surprisingly powerful for what it is meant to be (operating system level file viewer). I don't know if any similar tools exist in #Linux that are 'os level' and have similar functionality.

IIRC #Gwenview on #KDE and #Ristretto on #XFCE don't have this ability.

Would be pleased to find a light app like this as well!
