I keep thinking I'm going to like roundwound strings on my Gibson ES-175 guitar. This is my second set of .013-.056 D'Addario XL's -- one nickel on steel, the other pure nickel.

They sound good, but the finger noise is too distracting.

I had a fresh set of flatwound D'Addario Chromes (also .013-.056) on hand, and I put them on today. They sound great. And no finger noise.

A few months ago, I tried an old set of Chromes that was probably in the drawer for 20 years. Those sounded bad (and were actually rusty in spots), but the new ones are really nice. A textbook flatwound set.

And the most critical string for me, the low E, is not tubby and dead out of the package like in my previous La Bella set (though I did really like LaBella Tapewounds before that)

Last June, my friend and colleague reviewed three sets of boutique guitar strings on three of his classic guitars. I personally know little about guitars, much less guitar strings, but I can see well that his guitar collection is on the clutch side.

Last July, my New Leaf Journal colleague, Victor V. Gurbo, wrote an article wherein he reviewed three boutique guitar strings on three of his classic guitars. I cannot attest to the reviews - for I have little hope of ever playing a guitar - but I will note that he included some clutch pictures from his guitar collection.
