@fd93 I'd run #gittea on #hetzner, skip #gitlab unless you're on a big team and need planning tools. You can mirror #github repos to it if you want to run locally on a Pi. I'd worry more about files and photos then anything else. Huge fan of #syncthing for that.

I'm planning on writing some more about tech on a new site soon: My first series is going to be called "To the forge!" and will be an exploration of different #git forges like #gitlab, @forgejo, or #gittea.

Only one small query: Where do I start? Does anyone know of any good resources for self-hosting a forge an what that entails? Thanks!

Very cool that @Codeberg is working on @forgejo. I am intending to move over to self-hosting after federation functionality is complete; in the meantime, I can't expect everyone who wants to contribute to my repos to sign up for an account and check it manually for notifications (since I didn't set up an email service).

Apparently #CodeBerg is run like a #coop too! 25 euros a year for optional voting membership.

Since I am digging into #distributed web stuff I also found a version based on #P2p and Secure Scuttlebutt #SSB. You might want to check it out. I had not much time to look at it, but sure will do.

This is one of the advantages of #SourceHut over most of the other forge platforms (Savannah, GH, GL, #GitTea, etc), you can interact with some aspects of a repo just by sending email, without needing an account on the server. After all, an account on a website just means that you're (probably) a human with a working email address.

@adfeno also, why start a new repo-hosting packages when there are already multiple free code options; #GitLab, #Gogs, #Gittea, #Phabricator, and whatever #Savannah runs on? #WhyReinventTheWheel
