For #lenovo #thinkpad #t480 #t480s #t490 #t490s #t440 #t470 etc. #tseries under #nixOS does a/the #LTE #cellular #modem (e.g. #Fibocom #L830-EB #4G LTE #WWAN Modem) work without special measures i.e. does it "appear" in the GUI OS e.g. #gnome & become available for use automatically on installation or update of nixOS e.g. by running update of configuration in usual way? Are there special options in configuration.nix one has to set first? Even then, does it work? Anyone have LTE success here?

@[email protected] yeah, that's what I know for like a decade...
Also it's not a simple #VendorLock but a #Whitelist of PCI-IDs, MAC Adress- and IMEI Number Ranges, so it's not enough to have i.e. a #Lenovo-rebranded #Fibocom #850GL which is a rebadged #Intel #XMM7360, but only the version offered for i.e. the #ThinkPad #P15v will be accepted and initialized.

Moreover, it appears that TMo are using the #Fibocom FG360-NA-03 specifically as seen in aforementioned datasheet. The difference with the FG360-NA-00 and FG360-NA-05 versions is that their datasheet lists "driver" as “Linux 4.1” instead of OpenWRT for the -03 spec. Main difference between all of them seems to be supported wireless bands as they apply to the carrier. The -03 variety for TMo appears to support a bunch more bands (TMo + Sprint) as a result. The #MT6890 AP is a #CortexA55, for completeness sake.

What, you thought I wasn't going to self-nerdsnipe? So according to TMo's datasheet[1] the gateway contains a #Fibocom #FG360NA 5G module which itself is built on the #Mediatek #T750 SoC, which (yes it's turtles all the way down) contains a number other MT ICs including an #MT6890 quad-core ARM AP. That processor apparently is running a "driver" designated as “Kernel 4.19 #OpenWRT 19.07 (?)” but according to the previous research it boots Android? Weird stuff.
Wish me luck while I decide whether to attempt soldering headers onto the alleged UART connection of the 5G gateway I am supposed to return unharmed to its rightful owner, eventually 🧯

@stdevel @bradlinder that is sadly not the truth anymore.
Despite being "#UbuntuCertified" absolute basics like the #WWAN module didn't wotk at all on a work issued #ThinkPad #P15v.
Neither them nor #Canonical nor #Fibocom (#850GL WWAN Card) nor #Intel (#XMM7360 is the chipset of said card) felt responsible to fix it.Not gonna talk about #nvidia being shitty again on that occasion...

@malcircuit Yeah, #Debian is masochist distro in that regard.
I explicitly chose #Ubuntu LTS 20.04 because the device was officially supported.
Still I'll stay mad for the refusal of #Lenovo, #Fibocom & #Intel to provide drivers for the integrated #WWAN modem:
Fibocom #850GL - which is just a rebadged Intel #XMM7360...
Because I know drivers for it exist - just like Intel refusing to release the Driver for the #GMA500 aka. #ImaginationTech PowerVR SGX GPU known als #Poulsbo...
