"...As a series of late summer wildfires hit California, a new study published in JAMA by researchers from Boston University's School of Public Health and the University of Helsinki found that the January 2025 wildfires in Los Angeles County may have caused at least 440 deaths, far exceeding the 31 fatalities officially recorded by California authorities.
Using excess mortality modeling previously applied to COVID-19, the researchers found a 7% spike in deaths between Jan. 5 and Feb. 1. ..."

The two summer median trends I constructed continue to reflect weekly mortality very well. Mortality runs way below the inadequate FSO expectation, of course.
I expect mortality to pick up, should Covid incidences continue to rise.

Excess mortality in Australia 2020-2023
Mortality is 6.1% higher than expected for the first eight months of 2023.
This compares to 14.1% for the first eight months of 2022.
When there were strong restrictions and people wore masks (2020) there was a positive outcome.
The year the restrictions were abandoned and people stopped looking out for each other, the excess mortality skyrocketed.

@eniko This paywalled article shows that #excessmortality is probably again caused by #covid (because it can weaken immunity, at least for a while), and also by the heavy overload on hospitals, which causes postponed healthcare which also causes more deaths.
The large number of now ill people who were working in the healthcare sector might also have impact. That should still be researched further.
