Jay #Bhattacharya moves from disparity researcher to DEI enforcer | STAT https://www.statnews.com/2025/08/01/nih-director-jay-bhattacharya-shifting-dei-record/ “Despite his avowed support for vulnerable people, Bhattacharya’s tenure has seen such science swept up in the Trump administration’s attack on DEI. Grants for #healthdisparities research have been terminated left and right, sometimes affecting the very topics he’s said are worth studying. When confronted, he claimed, incorrectly, that such cuts hadn’t happened.” Power corrupts.

Great article featuring Wesley Jackson Wade's experiences, and Paul Morgan's work on the disparity in ADHD diagnosis in Black children. This is a must-read folks.

Devastating story from the Washington Post:
In the early 1980s, people in the poorest communities were 9% more likely to die each year, but the gap grew to 49% in the past decade and widened to 61% when covid struck. And yes, opioids and violence are real, but the data show it's chronic disease that's wrecking Americans in middle age. Huge disparities, but even wealthier people get subpar care.

ADHD Babes is an amazing nonprofit for Black women and non-binary folks. Please consider giving if you're able and if not, please share!
Launching during the pandemic, they have done so much: support groups, body doubling sessions, and more for FREE/low cost. This is a truly excellent nonprofit that has a serious impact.

I look at the health consequences of period shocks (e.g., public health crises) & how these shocks exacerbate or equalize existing health inequalities. I’m interested in #mortality, #fertility, and #birthoutcomes.
Currently work as a #postdoc on Jenn Dowd's ERC grant (MORTAL) and in Sept 2023 will start my Marie Curie Fellowship on HealthShocks (Population Health & Period Shocks)! Both w/ the excellent team at the #LCDS at Oxford.

Individuals experiencing income loss and food insecurity were more likely to report they would be using a different method of contraception if not for COVID-19, compared to respondents without income loss or food insecurity. A larger share of respondents —14% in July 2020 and 22% in Jan 2021— reported not using their preferred method of contraception due to COVID-19.
