  1. Hey guys, I don't want to ask some ai powered slop machine about it, so can I ask you if you know what it is?

Taken on a forest walk today in East Cork, it was about the size of a blueberry and almost perfectly round until the dog sat on it a bit.

It was in a pocket under a fallen tree, suspended from the earth above it by this white trail you see. I thought it was a fungus, but I couldn't see it very well, so I photographed and enlarged it to see something very egg sacky.

  6. @yora So when you’re comming up with these names, and doing it properly, you’re basically doing #entymology backwards.

There’s the history, heraldy, geography, politics, religion, association, homonyms, linguistics, and on top of all this probably a whole host of in world misunderstandings that all led up to an ”Ottoman” refering to both an empire and a piece of furniture.

IIRC Tolkien did the other way around. Dude just wanted to dabble in #conlang so he had to come up with a world for it.

  13. @futurebird
My son took this picture on the window before heading to school today.
iNaturalist tells me it is an Eastern Black Carpenter Ant (location is in Boston).
Can you tell if it is a drone? I imagined it was small for a queen, but am not an expert at all.

  18. Buff-tailed bumblebee, hind legs loaded with pollen, obtaining nectar from the flowers of salvia ‘Javier’. The bee lacks the mouth parts to obtain nectar via the flower’s opening and so it resorts to ‘burglary’, making a hole in the base of the flower near the sepals from which to extract it. #Plants #Flowers #Bumblebees #Insects #Entymology #bloomscrolling

  28. Asking the #fediBrain here, what are these Greek ants doing? They seem to be piling spikey seeds around their front door. They don't seem to be taking the seeds underground. Fortification? Context: southern Peloponnese olive grove. #ants #zoology #ecology #entymology
