  1. @solusspider

Phanpy and Elk are both really good.
    I also use https://orbitalvore.vercel.app (@orbitalmartian's #Enafore fork) a whole lot, as it's very light-weight, and sometimes https://masto-fe.superseriousbusiness.org/, which is a fedi front-end based on mastodon's web interface.

  2. Goodbye #Enafore @enafore, federated replies to local-only posts is a bug that is too big to ignore :flan_sad:

  3. Hmm, I was liking enafore.social as a #Semaphore replacement, but I just replied to a local-only post and it set it to federate :flan_facepalm:

(For context, Semaphore doesn't interpret local-only status at all. But if you reply to a local-only post without specifying either way, Hometown will keep your reply local-only. #Enafore does interpret local-only status, but unhelpfully set the reply to federate.)

  4. Almost 4 years ago Mastodon, and by extension the Fediverse, became and continues to be essentially my sole social media platform.

A significant factor in this was when I discovered Pinafore and immediately fell in love. You know when you use software that just *feels* right, like Corel Paradox or Turbo Pascal and so on?

I was using Paradox daily at a former employer sixteen years after Corel ceased active development, and it could very well still be in use there today. Pinafore quickly became as vital for me as Paradox was for the more than eight years I worked there.

Unfortunately Pinafore's creator archived the project, but it lives on in various forks, of which I hopped from one to the next as each one eventually became archived, or dormant, or disappeared altogether (Anyone remember Mahoot?).

It's almost like the project is cursed, because I know of at least half a dozen Pinafore variants that all started out with great intentions and noticeable activity but eventually fell silent.

At least.. a year ago maybe? a bug was introduced somewhere along the line that caused buffers to hang if any posts fall under a "hide with warning" filter were found. Watching the spinning circle of dots endlessly loading, refreshing because *sometimes* that fixed things, as it triggered a BPD meltdown in me countless times.

Other issues or lacking vital new features (translation, editing a post, etc.) caused me to very reluctantly try other front-ends but I just couldn't deal with it. I even tried consciously *forcing* myself to use the other ones and despite the aforementioned buffering problem, I found Pinafore and its successors *less* maddening than these other interfaces. (No offense to the other front-ends; they're all amazing projects and work great for some people, but for whatever reasons they just don't work well for me.)

As I mentioned before, the Pinafore-style interface just fit my needs perfectly. So I just continued to be frustrated because I didn't have the knowledge/experience.

Yesterday, however I discovered @dome 's new Pinafore fork, Zocial. (Pinafore -> Semaphore -> Enafore -> Zocial). It's available at zocial.ztfr.eu.

True, Zocial is generated using Claude, but this seems like the only practical opportunity for us to have to attain a fully-operational Pinafore-style interface. I honestly believe it's a matter of accessibility because no other front-end has given me the freedom to learn about the Fediverse more than Pinafore.

Maybe I'm being a selfish, neurotic, myopic Goldilocks. I have no rebuttal for those accusations and I apologize for disappointing anyone, but the Fedi is basically my makeshift warm line and I need to keep that as easy for me to use as possible because I can't function without it.

Yes, I know.. "just don't use it!" Yes, I realize if Nolan Lawson had never developed Pinafore, life would go on. Life would also continue if we'd never invented defibrillators, but they sure are handy sometimes.

@dome fixed the above-mentioned bug, and a couple of others, in a matter of minutes today. It feels like finally being rid of a sore tooth. I hadn't realized just how infuriated I was becoming rather than coping.

Look, if someone wants to fork Enafore and repair the bugs that Claude already took care of, I'll almost certainly follow because with all due respect to @dome, I trust a human programmer more than I trust AI output.

However, that just doesn't seem to be possible. We're humans, and humans (understandably) have lives that aren't always congruent to dev plans.

But I personally *need* this interface to work. I love it. Surely I can't be the only one either, with so many people making forks of Pinafore.

So.. it's up to you dear reader (if you're even still awake) to decide if you want to try Zocial, but as for me I've already jumped head-first into it, slop or not.

  5. This is slop, slopware, but there are no active forks of Pinafore and even though the original interface has improved greatly using keyboard navigation, I don’t think there will be anything like the clean and elegant and very accessible Pinafore I still have no clue if this maintains the accessibility of its predecessor but it appears to be an active fork of Enafore. 6. I am looking for someone who wants to jointly work on a new fork of enafore (a Mastodon/fediverse client based on pinafore). I have some really nice ideas here but implementation costs time and also experience. Maybe some of you are  interested contributing and supporting these ideas.

If you want to follow the progress, just check out the repo: https://git.ztfr.eu/Dome/Enafore

I will create a roadmap to explain what features I am aiming for in the next couple of  days.

  7. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

    My kingdom for a fully-functional #enafore ..

I'm willing to do terrible things if someone forks it and fixes it

  8. I think we've finally reached the point where the default Mastodon web app is better than all the alternative web apps, at least on desktop;

    * Pinafore is abandoned, various forks got more development, but Enafore.social isn't working reliably for me in LibreWolf

    * Elk.zone is still alpha, and does annoying things like the popup when I copy text, and not letting me move @mentions

    * Phanpy.social prevents me navigating the full thread while replying

    #Mastodon #Pinafore #Enafore #Elk #Phanpy

  9. Despite making some major progress on the codebase inherited from Pinafore (adding post editing), Enafore.social seems to have become really buggy recently. Are there any Pinafore forks still under active development?

  10. @jlw_the_jobber @AnachronistJohn

Tuba is the Gnome app, IIRC. You're thinking of Tokodon.
I haven't tried Tokodon in a while, but I'm thinking about it again.

I do like both #Elk and #Phanpy, but I keep coming back to #Enafore (Specifically, @orbitalmartian's flavor) and masto-fe.

  11. Any fellow #enafore users experiencing a problem where posts just don't load? I thought it was my instance, but when I visit their site directly, all seems well. Sometimes a post loads, but I only get the content warning and can't expand it no matter what in Enafore

  12. Is anyone else having trouble getting their notifications to load in #enafore?

  13. PSA to #OrbitalFore and #Enafore users, a mass amount of emojis in your notifications tab will break things. The interaction buttons will not properly render, clearly as it's trying to load emojis first.

  14. In @enafore interface, every time I try to write a post I'm constantly distracted by new posts popping up just below where I'm typing. I have ADHD, which makes this kryptonite for me. But it must be a bit distracting for anyone.

It would be awesome if the posting box filled the screen, requiring me to manually to scroll down to see my feed. Or even better, put the compose box in its own tab, separate from the home feed.

Please, think of the easily distracted 😟

  15. I really wish #Enafore's "long toot" feature would be replaced with showing a stub of the toot and a "see more" button.

It's so annoying the way it's currently implemented. :P

  16. Hey #enafore users. I use Enafore as the frontend for my #gotosocial instance, and lately the notifications feed stopped refreshing automatically. It used to work but now I have to manually refresh the tab to see new notifications. Anyone having a similar issue?

  17. @g8phcon2 @amin @samd

I tried friendica for a bit, but never really "got" it.

That's the beauty of the #fediverse, we can try all kinds of different interfaces and styles and still interact on the same basic playing field.

I miss #Mastodon's interface a little bit, but #GtS has some killer features like #Markdown support.

(And yes, I'm familiar with the masto-fe. It's nice, but not 100% the same. Most of the time, I'm just rocking @orbitalmartian's #enafore instance/soft-fork or @tut)

  18. Ooof.. I cannot recommend #enafore and its #pinafore siblings enough. After accidentally hitting the Escape key after spending half an hour drafting a post, the relief of opening the compose window and having everything still be there after is quite an adrenaline rush.

Yes, I know, if I just used a text editor or word processor with autosave I wouldn't need to worry about it.

But I'm lazy and like the enafore interface. So.. pfffth.

  19. CW: TIL that in enafore

you can pin your bookmarks instead of the local timeline.

Press 4 to select "Community", <tab> to the pushpin next to "Bookmarks", <space> to select that.

Now your bookmarks appear in column 3, replacing the local timeline (which I no longer use).

This feature has existed since forever, probably already in pinafore, but I only really used it just now.

    #enafore #pinafore

  20. oder gibs schon wieder einen neuen/"besseren" fork?

Angenfangen hab ich mit #semafore, dann #pinafore (oder andersrum, völlig egal); nun hab ich #enafore.

    Vielleicht doch wieder #phanpy?

Was son guter Client, der nicht der Mastdon-client ist?

  21. Ok, strange. Now on both #enafore and @orbitalmartian's Orbitalfore, when I try to re-select markdown formatting when editing a toot, it just cancels the edit.

  22. @orbitalmartian

P.S., can anything be done about #Enafore reverting to plain text when editing?

    Kinda annoying. :P

  23. @corbden I rarely use the web interface. If I may plug my personal favorite, enafore.social is my go-to. I really like its snappy performance and keyboard shortcuts that actually work correctly. #enafore

  24. Has everyone except Dreamwidth and the makers of TweeseCake forgotten how to make an edit page/option that is actually easy to use? It's an absolute mess on the Friendica page itself, so that it could take me up to ten minutes just to be able to edit a post, and Enafore, which is supposed to be an improvement on Semafore has an edit page that is completely inaccessible with NVDA. It just says "Dialogue". Whatever happened to choosing "edit" and having a normal page open, with edit boxes, combo boxes, and a "save" button? See Dreamwidth's page for a perfect example of this, both for creating and editing posts.

    dreamwidth.org/

TweeseCake also works wonderfully, but it only allows you to go back so far in your own posts. There is no way to enter a link and have TweeseCake open it.

  25. A couple of updates on my fediverse app testing.

Big thanks to the person who clued me into #Enafore being the actively maintained Pinafore fork. It's now my main web app, and I recently noticed that post editing has been added 🥳

I occasionally use #Tuba on my laptop, running Fedora GNU/Linux with Mate, installed from repos. It has potential, but it's a bit limited. Turning off notifications doesn't seem to work on Fedora any better than it did on Trisquel.

  26. @mastoblind What are my fellow #blind users browsing fedi with? I'm currently using #enafore but it's lacking some important features and doesn't handle all notifications gracefully. Any other screen reader friendly clients? Perhaps different fork of Pinafore?
