when nomadic tribes moved from place to place, it was the most vulnerable and weakest (due to, for example, infancy or old age) who set the pace for movement, not the strongest and most able; the fitness of the most able thus went to supporting those less so, not dominating them. The most socially vulnerable only “dominated” in the sense that they set the benchmark for the priorities of the group.

Aight so me and two other good folks are starting a tech workers' cooperative. We've got plenty of stuff against us.
None of us have worked in a workers' cooperative or other kind of democratic workplace before.
There are barely a handful workers' coops in Norway. The national umbrella org for coops in Norway is basically dead and doesn't care about workers' coops at all.
Our coop is geographically distributed evenly along Norway, which means our northernmost worker-member would have to drive 24 hours by car or 44 hours by public transport to reach our southernmost worker-member.We've put in effort to reduce our weaknesses, and we've got things going for us too.
We've met and continue to meet with other workers' coops to learn from them and collaborate. We've got potential clients and pilot projects. We've got hardware. We've got tech and business know-how. We're working on the formal stuff, bylaws and agreements. It's going great.
Just wanted to let y'all know it can be done.

Everyone Matters [Sermon]
David Hayward is a cartoonist who goes by the name The Naked Pastor.
On his website he says
In case you’re wondering, I’m not actually naked. The idea behind my name, NakedPastor, is to seek to tell the naked truth – no matter how vulnerable it feels. I used to be a pastor but I’ve been creating art and working towards freedom with this community for over 10 years now.
He has a number of cartoons about sheep pens where the sheep have evicted one of the sheep – sometimes a black sheep, sometimes a sheep in rainbow or trans colors.
In some, the shepherd brings the evicted sheep back to the fold.
In one particularly distressing cartoon, the sheep keep discussing inclusion of the sheep outside, while the sheep outside perishes.
Let’s go to God in prayer.
God of wisdom, may the words that I speak, and the ways they are received by each of our hearts and minds, to help us to continue to grow into the people, and the church, that you have dreamed us to be.
Amen.
This country has a compassion crisis.
There’s not enough of it.
Various groups have been described as
Lazy
Criminal
Mentally ill
Evil
When there were cries of “Black Lives Matter” the response was “All Lives Matter.”
Language is interesting. Various phrases can mean more than one thing.
For example:
If I were to say that bread and water is better than nothing, you might agree.
If I were to say that nothing is better than getting one’s favorite meal prepared expertly, you might also agree.
So bread and water is better than nothing, which is better than you favorite meal, and so you would choose bread and water over your favorite meal.
What went wrong?
Nothing means different things in the two statements.
Bread and water is better than having nothing to eat.
There is no thing better than your favorite meal.
You would never say having nothing to eat is better than your favorite meal.
You would never say there is no thing better than bread and water.
Likewise, when people say “Black Lives Matter,” they are asserting that Black lives are included in the lives that matter.
They are making that case in opposition to a culture that does not seem to value Black lives.
When people counter with “All lives matter,” they are, at best, ignoring the apparent devaluation of Black lives, and at worst are deliberately drowning out the voices of people in pain.
There are arguments that gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and other sexual and gender minorities are asking for special rights that others do not have. In actuality, these people are asking for special protection of the same rights others have without question.
When people advocate for food, housing, and healthcare for people in poverty, they do not at the same time ask that the wealthy also have food, housing, and healthcare. We don’t need to ask for those that have much to have even more.
In his ministry, Jesus spent a lot of time with ordinary people, and especially with people that society had dismissed as being of low value. Yes, he spoke with the wealthy and powerful, but most often on behalf of the poor and oppressed.
For 165 years this church has continued as a Christian church in the Congregational tradition. In those years it has stood for social justice for many different groups.
We have had banners out front: At first, rainbow banners, but also other banners that lifted up the those with less power. And at times those banners have been defaced, torn, removed, and on at least one occasion someone tried to set fire to a banner.
These actions, while distressing, tell us:
- people can see our banners
- the banners are affecting people
These banners are a witness that we are the church for the one coin of ten, or the one sheep of 100. Beyond that, they are a witness that everyone matters.
This is not the same as “All Lives Matter” in response to “Black Lives Matter.” It is an assertion that no one is left behind.
The compassion crisis in our country is a dangerous crisis. It’s the kind of crisis that prophets have prophesied against.
In our reading from Jeremiah, God speaks through the prophet:
“For my people are foolish; they do not know me;
they are stupid children; they have no understanding.
They are skilled in doing evil, but do not know how to do good.”
– Jeremiah 4:22, NRSVue
Devout followers of religions are often concerned with their own purity: Not eating the wrong things, not wearing the wrong things, not doing the wrong things, and of course prayer and attendance at worship services.
But most religions have scripture about caring for others. The Hebrew prophets called for caring for the poor. Jesus called for caring for the poor.
And yet, these are the things that are often overlooked while we focus on our own holiness.
I believe that no one can be holy while excluding others.
I’ll say that again:
No one can be holy while excluding others.
We are living together on this planet. God has created us all and called us good. To consider ourselves above caring for another is presumptuous.
So my challenge to all of us this week is to search for the lost coin, find and recover the lost sheep, remember that everyone matters.
Amen.

#California’s #NPR and #PBS stations will cut staff and programs after funding slashed
By Maya C. Miller and Cayla Mihalovich
July 29, 2025 10:05 AM PT"Small NPR and PBS stations in California are teetering after Congress pulled funding from #PublicBroadcasting. Even big stations are bracing for cuts.
"Dozens of California public broadcasting stations will lose millions of dollars after Republicans in Congress voted to strip them of federal funding, cutting off a vital lifeline in rural communities and limiting access to local news programming in an era of hyperpartisan national media.
"While California broadcasters are assuring audiences that they plan to keep their signals running, they also warn that cost-saving changes are inevitable.
"Radio and television stations of all sizes across the Golden State say that to survive, they’ll likely be forced to lay off staff and cut programming unless they’re able to make up the losses through fundraising. Their leaders warn that the cuts will disproportionately harm locally produced programs, the most expensive to create but among their most popular content, that inform millions of listeners and viewers.
"Republicans have long wanted to cut funding for public broadcasting, arguing such services should be funded by private donors, not taxpayers. Their efforts prevailed when Congress last week finalized President Trump’s request to rescind $1.1 billion from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which provides grants to National Public Radio, the Public Broadcasting Service, their affiliates and other independent public media creators. All nine of California’s #Republican members of #Congress voted in favor of the funding cuts.
"Now, roughly 35 stations from #SanDiego to #Hoopa in #HumboldtCounty have lost critical funding.
"While many public broadcasters remain hopeful that they’ll find ways to endure, all agree the rescission undermines the #egalitarian mission of public media — to create a nationwide network that provides access to quality information, stories and music for local #communities.
" 'That has been our superpower,' said Joe Moore, president and general manager of #KVPR #ValleyPublicRadio in #Fresno. His station lost about 7% of its budget, or $175,000, from the #CPB.
" 'The New York Times doesn’t have the type of investment in #Alaska or in #NorthDakota — or on #TribalReservations, bringing local news from these communities — that public radio does.'
"Smaller stations whose budgets relied heavily on federal dollars to make ends meet are the most at risk of closure. In Eureka, the community-owned PBS affiliate #KEET-TV stands to lose $847,000 — nearly half of its operating budget — due to the defunding of CPB. To survive, all of its funding will need to come from #CommunitySupport, since the station has no institutional backer such as a local college or school district.
"David Gordon, KEET’s general manager and executive director, says that as much as he hopes the station will stay afloat even at reduced capacity, he won’t make the same bold proclamation that, 'We’re not going anywhere,' like some stations have.
" 'I can’t guarantee that KEET will be here once the dust settles from this defunding move,' Gordon said. He emphasized that he was speaking for himself and not on behalf of his station.
" 'I hope it is, and I think there’s a good chance that it’ll survive in some form. But absolutely will it? I don’t know if I can say that.'
"Nearby, Mendocino-based NPR member station #KZYX was forced to lay off its news director after losing 25% of its operating budget, or $174,000, from the CPB. That means news will include fewer in-depth stories, such as interviews with city council members or county supervisors, said Andre de Channes, KZYX’s general manager and director of operations.
" 'There isn’t the time to source out those kinds of things,' he said. 'So the news gets more like a headline news.'
"The station serves roughly 130,000 listeners, including in Mendocino County and part of Lake County. When De Channes first learned about the CPB cuts, he immediately worried about fire safety, since listeners who live in #OffTheGrid #RuralAreas without access to internet or cell service rely on KZYX for #EmergencyInformation.
"Those potentially lifesaving #EmergencyAlerts became a rallying cry for public media providers and their allies as they begged Congress to preserve funding for their stations, especially those in remote, rural areas that also tend to be Republican. Frank Lanzone, the longtime general manager of the NPR-affiliated KCBX in San Luis Obispo, said his station has sometimes been the only on-air source providing emergency information during #SevereWeather events." 'There’s been several times in very bad storms when we’re the only station on the air in our area because of either power outages or people’s generators ran out of propane,' said Lanzone, who has worked in public radio for more than 50 years.
KCBX, which serves about 45,000 listeners from Santa Barbara to Monterey, will lose $240,000 in funding from CPB, about 13% of its operating budget." 'It’s going to hurt the stations and the people that listen to them who need it the most,' Lanzone said. 'The most vulnerable, the ones out in the middle of nowhere.'
"Local programs are most at risk
Both radio and television station leaders emphasized that local programming — shows that are created and produced in-house rather than purchased from another producer — will be first on the chopping block. To produce locally focused public television programming, stations must invest additional time, money and work on top of the membership dues they pay to be affiliated with PBS, which unlocks a large catalogue of programming that they can air at no additional cost."For PBS viewers in the Inland Empire, that likely means the loss of popular local programs such as '#InlandEdition,' an Emmy-winning weekly half-hour public affairs show, and '#LearnWithMe,' an award-winning #bilingual English-Spanish children’s show, both of which are produced in house by affiliate KVCR.
" 'The local stuff that’s so important to people is probably the stuff that’ll go away,' said Connie Leyva, executive director of KVCR and a former Democratic state senator. The station stands to lose about $550,000 in annual CPB funding, about 6% of its budget.
She emphasized that the station also wanted to preserve its journalism staff — two full-time reporters and one part-time — who have recently focused on federal #ImmigrationRaids taking place across the region." 'If we’re not here, the #InlandEmpire is just hearing about what’s happening in Los Angeles,' Leyva said. 'We want to know what’s happening in our backyard, what’s happening at the schools around us, what’s happening at the Home Depots around us.' "
