Closing out the 18th century with another beautiful dress, this one in pink moiré silk. I feel the outfit is really completed by that blue ribbon on the waist. The fullness of the skirt is also appreciated!

The deep blue silk is really incredible, right? You could put that on any kind of dress today and it would look amazing. I also love the little bow (?) on the chest that the fichu is tucked into.

Fangirling around about my new victorian reproduction corset. Customs and VAT to get a handmade item from UK cost an arm and leg, but despite popular belief, it is incredibly comfy. Way better than most contemporary bras. Especially with linen shift underneath.

Printed textiles have been around for a VERY long time, and they had an Absolute Moment in 18th century Europe and North America, with all manner of lovely printed cottons, from complex multi-coloured florals if you could afford them, to simpler, single-colour patterns. Here is a mid-18th century infant's cap with insertations of Hollie-point. My research indicates Hollie-point was not (solely) "peculiarly English" as stated by lace scholars over the past 60 years. This fine example is Scottish, specifically Glaswegian, and is held in the Glasgow Museums Resource Centre collection. What a privilege it was to study it last October.
