Früher galten die Doldrums für Seefahrer als Todeszone. Wo sich Flauten und Gewitterstürme abwechseln, werden heute Regatten entschieden. Schwermut breitete sich einst unter der erbarmungslosen Sonne und der drückenden Schwüle aus. Daher auch der Name: „Doldrum“ bedeutet so etwas wie Trägheit oder dumpfe Stimmung.
