Great story, and it's fascinating to see Darwin's diary next to the captain's.

"The same sea filled our decks so deep, that if another had followed it is not difficult to guess the result." Charles Darwin, Beagle Diary, 13 Jan 1833.

Dry laconic understatement here, beautiful in its rhythm and its trusting collusion with the reader. We can picture such a passage in Daniel Defoe or Laurence Sterne.

  2. For #TravelTuesday and #OnThisDay in 2016 we were at sea, cruising around #CapeHorn off the southern tip of #SouthAmerica. It was cold, rainy, windy, and the sea was choppy but not too rough given the reputation this part of the world has. A mild disappointment for us, because there's nothing we like more than the motion of the ocean, and the rougher the better.

  3. 4 yrs ago this week, I spent 11 days in thunderous wind camping on #CapeHorn (gusts hit 75 mph) searching for something no one had ever documented: the world’s southernmost #tree—not the last species, but the last individual specimen.

It was a comically miserable quest, filled w/penguin guano and dicey trekking across treetops. #onassignment #nationalgeographic nationalgeographic.com/magazin

  4. A most remarkable half hour - sail from Hamburg around Cape Horn in the worst of all weathers, in 1920. Narrated by your cameraman, often filming from aloft.

(Saw a shorter version of this below decks on the Glennlee tall ship at Glasgow's excellent Riverside Museum.)
