Involve your #legal department early on, or you might have to pay external lawyers to tell it that you’re doing nothing illegal.

In web technology, software development advances faster than elsewhere. Too fast for your #RSEng requirements. Thus, it is okay to not use the newest stuff.

Question from the discussion after the talk at #deRSE23: Why are many #OpenSource software developers seemingly not as interested in #usability as commercial businesses are? Because there is always something more interesting than including a certain #UI improvement? Or because you’d have to set up a business-like structure with management to do it properly?

Jan Dittrich at #deRSE23:
In #academia, #usability is often tested by knowing your community (via academic networking) and building up intuition. Quite different from commercial applications, where they run quantitative studies, surveys and tests.

However, this might exclude people who are not yet part of your community from using your #researchSoftware! Usability can be thought of as #accessibility with regard to newcomers.

Jörn Kreutel at #deRSE23 giving a new data point for the time needed for an #interdisciplinary project to create #researchSoftware for comfortably entering data into a custom specialised database for a #DigitalHumanities platform in the works:
9️⃣ months.
That’s really fast; they even admitted that in the talk!

Main takeaway: Give your humanities scholars the impression that they have direct influence and control over the developed software!

#CUDA (#nVidia) and #HIP (#AMD) are essentially the same, you just have to use a different prefix. And they are both #proprietary.

So, best use an #openStandard, #crossPlatform, vendor-agnostic framework for your #GPU code. To make sure it can run on any HPC system.

For #AI applications, you don’t need nVidia GPUs as well. Platform #portability is possible nowadays!

Well can I just say that I agree with everything 👏🤓

Why are so many people, who are normally curious people, hesitant to apply principles of good #softwareDevelopment? – Because of:
– time pressure
– #publishOrPerish
– #RSEng is undervalued on a scientific level

Remedies:
– always be empathetic!
– lead by good example
– offer help
– identify who is in a critical position for the #researchSoftware project and get them to co-conspire

Takeaways from one of #deRSE23’s early morning sessions:

– Coupling #RSEng to domain knowledge is essential, as is continuous #funding and work on #researchSoftware. (René Caspart)
– Even #NASA does sometimes cancel support of tools you rely on. (Falk Howar)
– #ResearchSoftware has other metrics of success, compared to commercial projects. (@jbernoth)
– Depending on the stakeholder, the formats of needed #documentation are vastly different (#Git commits, a #unitTest, annual reports). (J.B.)
