A memory from this day in 2020:
I was walking to the pharmacy when I noticed a dad and two little kids hanging out on the sidewalk ahead of me. They had a shovel , and what looked like a white bag of trash was lying on the ground. I walked out into the street a bit to give them ~6' of distancing when I heard the man say something to me.
When I stepped back onto the sidewalk I turned to find out what he said. He gestured at the bag of trash. It was a dead gull.
One of the little kids said, "It's still alive. Its eye moved."
I looked more closely at the poor creature. "Aww, no," I said.
"I don't know what to do," said the man.
I shook my head. "That poor thing looks like it needs to be put out of its misery. I'd recommend decapitating it with your shovel."
He nodded his head. "Kids, you might want to look away."
I looked at the little kids. "He needs to kill the bird so it does not suffer anymore. You might not want to watch."
I kept walking, thinking about the bird, and worrying that the man might not be able to bring himself to euthanize the bird. When I got to the pharmacy, it was closed, so I turned around. I was walking back home, psyching myself up to kill the bird if the man had not been able to do it.
And that's when I saw the funeral procession. The man was walking toward me. The older of the two little kids was the pallbearer, dragging the shovel along behind him with the dead gull riding in state.
Today, I am a monarch. I ordered an execution, and it was carried out. I never expected to gain ascendancy this way.
