🦗💨 What looks like a stick, smells like peppermint, and wages chemical warfare in the world's oldest #tropical #rainforest? Peppermint stick insects in #Australia's #Daintree.
These #insects have evolved alongside Pandanus #plants for millions of years, using them for camouflage and chemical compounds for their defensive spray. They can aim and fire mint-scented #chemicals that burn and disorient #predators, but green tree #ants have their own formic acid spray in this brutal battle for survival.

Rainforest wanderer – Birds in the landscape winner
‘The southern cassowary is a keystone species of the #Daintree, dispersing seeds that help sustain the world’s oldest rainforest. On this day, I noticed one upstream, slowly navigating the creek in search of fallen fruit. I positioned myself on an embankment and waited as it advanced with deliberate steps, pausing to pluck fruit from the water.'

'Crabs Dream of Flight' is an image I found on the coast of the #Daintree region of North #Queensland
Crabs create these little balls when filter feeding - picking out all the good bits between the sand granules. It's not every day they make pictures though!

At first, it looks like a fungi 🍄 . But in fact it is a single-celled slime mold which taxonomic placement is still contentious. I got this one (Ceratiomyxa fruticulosa) in the Daintree RF of northern Australia.
What a fascinating group of organisms!
