#HIRI researchers deployed #CRISPRi for the first time for the functional characterization of the gut mutualist Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron. They identified an sRNA that modulates the microorganisms' growth in the presence of bile. The findings should contribute to a better understanding of the bacterium’s lifestyle in its native environment, the human intestine, and to the development of clinical applications. The study was published in @PNASNews: https://www.helmholtz-hiri.de/en/newsroom/news/detail/news/bacteroides-thetaiotaomicron-physiology-under-bile-stress/

#Phages are key drivers of #MicrobialEvolution, but many #phage genes are poorly understood. @denish_piya @AdamArkinLab @vivek_mutalik &co use arrayed genome-wide #CRISPRi to map gene the essentiality landscape in the iconic coliphages λ & P1. #PLOSBiology https://plos.io/3uLtzgU

Today, Dr. Rosa Mino shared her beautiful work on clathrin-mediated endocytosis, a key process that regulates availability of cell surface molecules in the central nervous system, cancer & other cell types. Thank you, Dr. Mino!

New paper now published in #mSystems by Pascal Hols' lab with some help from us (Johann Mignolet) where 3 cool genome-wide #CRISPRi screens are used to study competence in #Streptococcus #salivarius. It finds that #competence increases upon cell wall impairment with a role for #StkP
