I assume this is because of devs across the ecosystem working hard to integrate a bunch of cool new features into mainline servers and apps; native voice/ video calls, Sliding-Sync, MLS implementation, etc. The last time mainline Element got close to absorbing ElementX - the testbed for shiny, new features - things also got a bit ... unpredictable.
