  1. But #factoryfarms/ #CAFO are economically efficient. (The silent disclaimer: IF AND ONLY IF you conveniently ignore all of the externalized costs)

  2. The World Bank Must Stop Ploughing Funds into Factory Farming

"We found that 16 leading international banks together invested $3.33 billion in #AnimalAgriculture in 2023. Over two thirds (68 % or $2.27 bn) was channeled to factory farming – projects that support concentrated or intensive animal operations. Just 2 % ($77 million) went towards non-industrial animal farming projects, which invest in small-scale agriculture and more sustainable practices."

  3. It seems large herbivores may be important for some ecosystems (and, to be clear, #CAFO are not a desirable ecosystem, they are an abomination)

  5. "In the last week we have learned that #H5N1 is widespread in ruminant animals across the US. First goat kids were found with unusual neurological symptoms that turned out to be H5N1 at a farm in Western Minnesota. Then widespread unusual symptoms in dairy cows in Texas and Kansas turned out to be avian influenza as well.
Moreover, in the dairy cows this is showing up in large scale operations in places where there are a LOT of cattle feedlots. And cows in #CAFO feedlots are famously sick already - they are fed #antibiotics basically to keep them from dropping dead, but cows in confinement agriculture headed to slaughter are generally unhealthy, which ups the chance that the virus will mutate to spread cow to cow.
In order to prevent that, the solution will almost certainly be the same one that has been used in confinement poultry operations - mass slaughter. So at an absolute minimum, we are looking a substantial increase in the price of beef, goat, probably lamb & milk." ko-fi.com/post/Bird-Flu-Round-

  6. Love the Transfarmation project by Mercy for Animals, which helps farmers move from raising animals to growing plants. That includes high-profit crops like mushrooms and hemp. 7. "“We have dozens of these facilities that are within a mile of the Big Sioux River or a tributary, and they’re not managing their waste,” Roberts said.

Complaining about such facilities became harder during the most recent legislative session. Legislators passed a law that says only the owner or lessee of an affected property can file a nuisance action against an agricultural operation such as a CAFO, and only if the affected property is within 1 mile of the operation."

  8. Really great segment (link below) from Science Friday on Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) and their impact on the environment. A really important point they made was how states are making it harder to advocate for a cleaner environment

"In 2022, the Iowa Supreme Court reversed a 2004 decision making it harder for landowners to sue CAFOs for damages. A small town in Wisconsin is currently being sued for passing an ordinance limiting pollution from CAFOs.

Every state also has some version of a “right-to-farm” law, which prevent individuals from filing nuisance suits against agricultural operations. Researching these laws, Ashwood and her colleagues found the most right-to-farm litigation is happening in the Midwest, and CAFOs are the most likely to win these lawsuits."

  9. “They see this ordinance, if not challenged, as something that may become more the norm around the state,”

Big ag has worked for years to push their narrative, and it has worked very well for them. When communities try to push back, big ag gets big mad.

  11. Happy 12th of #DecemBird!

Animal agribusiness works very hard to encourage us to believe these kind of lies.

Can you imagine the effect if all animal products included literal pictures of the daily lives of its victims?

  12. Happy 7th of #DecemBird!

It's telling how we subjugate the timid species rather than the aggressive ones. This might be an interesting tactic to try: pop in to a farm and dress all the birds up like eagles or vultures!
