  1. "We force animals to adapt to the constraints of farming modelled on the mass production of manufactured goods, whereas farming should respect the ethological needs of animals. This is a transgression because we grant ourselves an absolute right that we do not have. This violence towards animals is a condemnation of us. Yet our relationship with animals could be an opportunity to think about a way of inhabiting the Earth that makes coexistence with other species possible. This requires new foundations for ethics and politics."

  2. “Security Has a Beef With Photography”

The Latina in the safety vest had a beef with me. The company had surveilled me on camera. “What are you doing here,” she asked, right in front of the Visitor Center. I replied that I was taking a pictures. She said, “No photos allowed. Delete them.”

I did not delete any photographs, instead I published one.

  7. “This is not a whodunit. This is a why-dunit,” said Kevin Little, one of Rosenberg’s lawyers, during his opening statement.

He said Rosenberg, who has been charged with 3 misdemeanors & felony conspiracy, investigated the plant for 2 months before taking the birds & consulted a veterinarian who was concerned about images that appeared to show animals being boiled alive. Chris Carraway, her other atty, said in a statement that this “was a rescue, not a crime.”

  10. Something I notice in this report (and in most others on the subjecti) is that there is almost no mention of the role of factory farms in the the spread of H5N1. While these large operations may provide economies of scale, they also increase risks to animal and human health.

  11. Our current commercial hybrids require petrochemical fertilizers & industrial tech to make work, so basically, they're useless for the reality that's coming. Peak oil, phosphorus, and resource depletion in general, as well as the climate collapse, will all but wipe out that kind of farming.
