Now, the Recording Academy is ensuring that doesn't happen again by renaming that award Best Contemporary Country Album, and creating a new one, Best Traditional Country Album. When the the melody truly starts in Beyoncé’s “American Requiem”, it strongly reminded me of another song, but I couldn’t place it, and nobody seemed to be mentioning it. There are plenty of other homages people mention, but not this one. I knew it was late 60’s / early 70’s; the whole song feels a bit like a protest song from that era.
I finally figured it out.

When I saw “Blackbird” in the track list for “Cowboy Cover” I was expecting a couple of lyrics inspired by the Beatles classic. Maybe a sample at most.
Instead Beyonce gave us a truly inspired cover of one of my favourite songs of all time. What a gift 🥹
The whole album is amazing too. She did it.

Beyonce is an absolute master marketer. The very best. Even more than Madonna and Lady Gaga. Not since Grace Jones and Kate Bush has there been someone who knows how to move the market, get attention and reinvent herself. EXCELLENT ALBUM. BEY DAY!

Went mid-afternoon to Renaissance and had the theatre to ourselves!
It’s so good! And so much queer representation; on stage, and in interviews.
Saw Shireen in it! She’s in the background when Beyoncé is talking in a planning meeting towards the end of the first hour. I asked her if I missed any other shots, but she said no, she’s very good at avoiding the camera. Plus she has the added advantage that she’s also supervising the edits. :) And she has four credits. Post Producer, Post Supervisor, Additional Editor, and Additional Videography.

Going to see Renaissance this afternoon.
I have two goals.
1. See if my daughter is in any of the BTS clips, or if she edited herself out.
2. See how many times she shows up in the credits.

The cuts to the crowd here don’t qualify as fan service. Nearly every time we’re with someone in the audience, they’re amplifying what’s happening onstage, complementing, meme-generating. They’re giving face.
