One of my favorite Arabic female poets who was known as the Greatest Poet of Her Generation was a slave woman by the name of Inan. She does eventually get freed, but I often think about how we derive enjoyment off of her suffering.

Brother, misery nestled everywhere - through our will.
Do not lament. Others do not hear our woe.
Instead follow me with a pick and spade that we may dig a trench in which to hide our dead.
