  22. I'm going to talk about the sahiqat (Ψ΅Ψ§ΨΩ‚Ψ§Ψͺ) genre. In the pre-modern #Arab world this was the genre of sapphic or lesbian stories. It was regarded as the purest form of love because of how impossible it was.

Different than Western sapphic love stories, it re-affirmed their devotion to God. For example the most famous couple are al-Zarqa and Hind bint al-Nu'man.

  24. "I come from there and I have memories
Born as mortals are, I have a mother
And a house with many windows,
    I have brothers, friends,
And a prison cell with a cold window.
Mine is the wave, snatched by sea-gulls,
    I have my own view,
And an extra blade of grass."

  26. Latest read, Evil Adored (1936) by Naguib Mahfouz, from Voices From the Other World; philosophical fable of ancient Egypt in which an aged wise man spreads community & selflessness to the ire of the professionals of virtue; magistrates & law enforcers--who lament their loss of importance.

Personally, a lot of what they said about #sff resonated with me and made me consider a new way to read and write the genre.

  29. Its taken a while to post about Ismail Sabri Basha because of how scarce information is about him in English is and I always try to point people to available sources.

Born in Egypt, graduated from law in France, he was one of the 19th and 20th century literati who developed Neo-Classicist Arabic writing. If not for him, among others, Arabic music and literature would not be where it is today.

The night drags on in infatuation
Sleep distances from the insomniac eyelid"

  31. Been wanting to post about this book, but keep forgetting. Anyways, here's my rec that you all should read Ahmed Sadaawi's Frankenstein in Baghdad.

It takes place in the middle of Baghdad bombings where a junk dealer stitches together random body parts, but a soul without a body takes it becoming an Iraqi made entirely out of Iraqis.

I especially like how it delves into folklore around St. George.

  32. Today, I would like to introduce you to the book which opened my eyes into the world of pre-modern Arab women.

It is in English, but is one of the most comprehensive women's histories of middle and upper class Arab women from the Fatimid Era (909–1171).

More so, it showcases that contrary to popular thought, Arab women had their own longstanding literary salon culture that wasn't borrowed from Europeans

  33. The #Arab poets Khalil Gibran and May Ziade wrote on "love of the soul over the flesh".

Both never married nor saw each other's faces, but shared a deep love for each other purely through their writings.

My own #writing and #novel has a main couple who share a love of the mind and soul long before any sexual interactions.

Anyone can rec any stories you or another has written which does this?

  35. Today I translated a poem by May Ziade (1886-1941). She was many things: intellectual, feminist, romantic, writer, poet, polyglot and musician. Her literary salons helped shape Modern Arabic Literature.

She was born a Maronite Christian and lived in Palestine, Lebanon and Egypt. Here is a #documentary about her tragic life, but I warn you the comments on women's education are overexaggerated and a bit false.

  36. I must recommend Al-Ma'arri's Epistle of Forgiveness (Ψ±Ψ³Ψ§Ω„Ψ© الغفران) to any fans of Dante's The Divine Comedy.

The story is about a poet who journeys through Heaven and hell just to meet other Arabic speaking poets and talk about poetry. It is a precursor to the Divine Comedy, but they likely had the same source material.

My personal favorite sections are when he meets the djinn and talks to the devil.

  37. I want to show off this short video which explains the neo-classical Arabic poetry movement in the 19th century pretty concisely.

In summary, the movement was largely in Egypt, but also in Lebanon and Syria and took the idea that poetry should have Classical Arabic form with contemporary thought.

  38. What I am is a freelancer in language publishing, with a substantial focus on #ArabicLiterature. I live in the Netherlands, because I ran from Brexit to do a PhD here. PhD has died, but I’m happy enough staying for now. Missing people back in the UK, though.

I’m a bookish nerd: I read a lot (history, philosophy, religion, science, and very occasionally fiction) and just love me an argument. Language learning is fun, as is piano, origami, the gym, and the indiscriminate slaughter of rottfiends.
