  1. We know that people use Substack because creators use it, but you should consider getting off of it for ethical reasons.

I know, it’s hard to discover Japanese media content, but there is a tool for that. That is called AniBlogTracker. We do eventually plan to add the ability to follow blogs in the future.

If you need alternatives, WordPress (despite it’s drama) and Ghost are the choices suggested. We may expand our offerings to provide affordable WordPress and Ghost hosting options for established bloggers who want managed hosting options tailored for Anime Bloggers and the like.

That said, if you use Substack for your Japanese media/culture related blog/newsletter, you should consider an alternative, and don’t support morally questionable platforms.

  16. For those who aren’t paying attention to the WordPress Drama, if you are using WordPress.com or host your blog there, you might want to think about moving your blog to your own host (self hosted) or managed WordPress Hosting. I know quite a number of people in the Anime Blogosphere use WordPress.com. I highly recommend that you get off WordPress.com for reasons below.

From all the accounts from Kellie and also former employees, Automattic is not doing well financially, which is why they started this feud with WP Engine, it’s a money issue.

In an event that Automattic goes under, your blog might disappear, so it’s probably a good idea to do the move now and have your hard work under your control if things really take a turn for the worse.

If you want some suggestions of Managed WP hosting, Siteground, WP Engine, Flywheel might be places to start.

For shared hosting, I don’t have any suggestions, but others can chime in.

If you want free (if you use the free version of WordPress.com), and you are hosting a blog focused on Japanese media or culture, you can request one at yoshino.garden, another Sakurajima service I run.

I will eventually write an editorial post on this and my 2nd anniversary of, well the start of me leaving the :deadbird: site.

  18. So, how did I came up with the idea of Yoshino Garden. Yoshino is of course a popular species of pink flowering cherry trees.

However, that is just the name. Believe it or not, I came up with the idea since in the mid up to the late 2010s, there was a host named AnimeBlogger.net (you might know this if you been in the Anime Blogosphere that long, that site if you ask, you can request for a free blog). There were other anime bloggers that offered free hosting. (from the Internet Archive - web.archive.org/web/2010040301)

Believe it or not, my Anime Blog was on free hosting (not on WordPress dot com) for the first two years of existance, before moving to my own host in late 2010. Back then, Anime Blogging was really active.

Sadly, sites that offered free hosting of Anime blogs went by the way side as the centralization of the internet happen. With enshittification and things getting worse, maybe it’s a good idea to get back into blogging and have your own space that you can control. Yes, to share your thoughts about Japanese media or culture.

Servers nowadays are really cheap, but of course there are going to be people in the fandom who can’t afford blog hosting (e.g. college student). I’m going to revive that and perhaps bring back the fun of blogging about Japanese media. Not to mention, you can connect your Anime Blog to the Fediverse as well, which is beneficial to the blogosphere in general.

  22. Anyone using WordPress.com to host your Anime blogs should consider moving their blogs off WordPress.com and to a self-host given that Matt can practically ruined the trust with hijacking the ACF plugin. With that, can you really trust hosting your blog on WordPress dot Com after they just hijacked a popular plugin. It’s basically a supply chain attack.

If anyone needs help moving their blog, I can help. If you don't have the technical knowledge to manage a WordPress install on a VPS or shared hosting with one-click installers, I suggest getting managed WordPress hosting since they can assist you in moving your blog, but not from Pressable.

If you are using a paid plan, you probably should wait until you are close to renewing it before moving your blog off WordPress.com.

If you move off WordPress.com, it will be possible to move to a hard fork of WordPress when one becomes viable with community support or a different platform like Ghost, etc.

  24. Since yesterday, it seems my WordPress stats gone poof as in not viewable for my blog, thinking it's commercial (it’s not, I don’t ask for donations and such on my blog since it's a personal hobby). They are asking $9 a month for me.

I think Automattic is doing something with their detection, which even causes websites that don't fit the criteria for being commercial marked as being commercial.

There are some people complaining about this, which means I'm not the only one. I didn't know Automattic is hurting for money after buying Beeper.

Of course, I want to show the Anime Blogosphere the benefits of the Fediverse, making it easier to follow blogs and even leave comments. Thanks to people reply to my blog posts, it saved my blog from having a lack of comments for the Winter season.

That said, the plugin isn’t prefect as WordPress's ActivityPub implementation is in its early stages, but it's better than it was last year.

  28. Anime, at one point of time, would put you at the low-end of the social status ladder. Before being nerdy and geeky was cool, pretty much anyone who watches anime were clumped up into “the people who reek of weirdness.”

This put anime lovers into an inevitable lonely space, if there’s nobody who’s as passionate as they were. On the positive note, watching anime is becoming more and more mainstream, with old fans receiving the embrace that they deserve, and new anime fans diving into the hobby without the seclusion the older generation experienced.

Coincidentally, NEETs are among the people with the most experience with isolation. It’s true that this phenomenon is a tragic and sad one. However, I think there is a profound experience about loneliness that only NEETs experience. What is it like to be cast out, exactly? How does it feel?

It just happens that I recently finished reading a classic book, written more than a century ago, The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. This book genuinely made me flabbergasted. Not only because of the tragic story, but also because of how Kafka described his protagonist, Gregor Samsa, and his despair in life.

This post might not the typical anime review or trope talk that I usually do. However, the book has many attributes that resemble the current condition of loneliness in today’s society, including what we occasionally see in anime. So, what exactly are they?

How Kafka’s The Metamorphosis And NEETs In Anime Depict Abandonment

    Franz Kafka

In the early days of college, I learned about Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. In short, people work and put effort to attain a certain level of security in some aspects in their lives. After they achieved what they require, they move on to something else that they want.

On top of this pyramid of motivation, there’s the self-actualization state. It’s where we get to define what we are in this world. Maybe some of us are superb with instruments, and thus you define yourself as a musician. Others might be so great at sport, so they decide to dedicate their life as athletes.

However, let’s say hypothetically everyone suddenly loses their hearing, or we get paralyzed out of nowhere. Yes, everyone would suffer from it. But, the ones who would take the most harms are those who depends on these senses, not only financially, but also as a human being.

In The Metamorphosis by Kafka, this is exactly what happens. Gregor Samsa, the protagonist, found himself suddenly turned into a giant bug-like creature. It means he’s no longer able to work, he’s no longer able to provide for his family, and he no longer can be the hardworking salesman for his boss. From that point, all the meaning in his life is gone, just like how most NEETs perceive their lives.

    Gregor Samsa And Modern NEETs

    Subaru gets isekaid

Gregor Samsa, gradually finds himself to be more and more miserable in the book. Both because of his own self-inflicted hate that he can’t bring in money for his family, and also because of his repulsing new form. Locked in his room, starved, and lonely, sounds familiar?

Yes, it’s an oddly familiar theme in isekai anime, especially where the protagonist is a NEET. The true terror that Gregor Samsa invokes doesn’t come from his bug-like appearance. But rather, it’s the abandonment that his character experience. The man who was once the sole breadwinner for his family, now he is nothing but a shame and must be hidden.

A shame and must be hidden? Well, isn’t that what a lot of recluse feel nowadays. I don’t know about you, but in this day and age, I feel like people not only become more and more drawn to their online presence. We want to be acknowledged for what we post on our Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, or on WordPress websites just like I do.

Living alone with a bunch of mangas and video games… The usual NEET life.

However, ask any older person out there who was born before Google was a thing. They’ll tell you, things were drastically different socially speaking. People in a town knew each other, we spoke to strangers in public just to say hi, we asked for directions. And, most importantly, there is no online job market, or online dating, that’s for sure.

On top of that, the common talks among my younger generation is how “rat-racey” this world feels, if that’s even a word. People compete for work against each other more intensely, we care so much about our personal branding and compare it to the next person on our social media recommendation.

So, if so happens you’re one of these NEETs, of course you’d feel the plummeting of your self-esteem. And when we reach our lowest point, we either become someone’s memory or filled with so much hatred to the world. When there’s no reason for you to love the world that seems to smack you like the bug you’re, despair and hatred becomes cultivated.

    Their Similarities And Difference

Living among trash, consuming cheap alcohol and instant noodle. Bocchi The Rock gets too real in this episode.

Similarly, it’s what a lot of NEETs have to live with, both in the real 3D world and the fictional anime world. They might not turn into a literal insectoid abomination, but the isolation and the psychological torment they go through are quite reminiscence of each other.

The only difference between Gregor Samsa and NEETs protagonists is Gregor actually had a purpose before his unforeseen transformation. On the other hand, most NEETs in anime are depicted as someone who already lost their hope long before their lives even started.

Dying after living a somewhat fulfilling life feels different.

The main similarity, however, is how they eventually got abandoned by their closed ones. Even in real life, this might also be true. It may sound harsh, but have you ever thought how many people would leave you if you stop giving whatever you are providing them? Or, if you never provide them with anything of value at all? Will they still love you?

At a first glance, both the book and the whole NEET protagonist trope in anime sound like a overly complicated “would you still love me if I were a worm?” question. But, realistically, a lot of people ended up on the streets, either after they got abandoned or their family broke up. And, to end your life in such state, that must feel so horrid

The Eventual Betrayal By Loved Ones

Who knows how many NEETs ended up like Rudeus, but without an isekai to be reborn into.

Kafka’s The Metamorphosis ending is one of the most horrifying endings I’ve come across in fiction. Spoiler alert, after a few months, Gregor’s family is forced to cut corners to get by. His elderly parents have to start working again, and they have to rent out a part of their home.

Gregor’s sister becomes increasingly hostile toward him, despite the fact she was the one who took care of him after his sudden transformation. In the end, everyone let out a breath of relief when they find Gregor’s lifeless body one morning.

This ending immediately reminds me of the protagonists’ death scenes in isekai anime. How many of them do you think are mourned by their family? In a similarly morbid situation in real life, of course, people would mourn their family members, even if the deceased had nothing much going on in their lives.

Rudeus true self in “the afterlife” does anyone in his original world miss him?

However, it’s not out of the question that they’ll just be buried and forgotten. This is what happens in the book, and I suspect it’s also what happens in Mushoku Tensei to Rudeus’s previous self. It might the morbid thing we, as anime fans, overlook in anime. Still, in my humble opinion, being abandoned even after death must be one of the most morbid things that can happen to a human being.

Personally, this is the part that broke my heart the most. Having an author just bluntly telling me if a person were a bug, no one would love them. They would become a burden to their families, a shame, an abomination. When they eventually died, it would be a blessing. Is this how our current reality now?

    So… What Now?

Uhh.. the world is so depressing.

This whole post might sound a bit depressing. The entire world sounds depressing to me to be honest after reading The Metamorphosis. This book brings me back to the reality that might have gone blurred because of how much fantasy and adventure anime has brought to my life.

There’s no power ups waiting for NEETs, there’s no harem of anime girls waiting in the afterlife. It’s actually astounding given that this book is from a century ago. However, should we dismiss anime and minimize it only to a mere wishful thinking? Of course not.

As naive as it sounds, if there’s anything that can we take from the wide variety in anime, it’s that we’ll come through eventually. Yes, life might suck, and it sucks even more if you’re a NEET. However, there are ways to make it better for ourselves. The power of friendship, caring families, or even sheer willpower, just like your classic shonen protagonist.

    Be someone’s Nijika.

So, if it so happens that this post reaches out to people who consider themselves as NEETs, I’d say, don’t give up. It’s okay if people call us losers for now, it’s okay if there’s nothing worthwhile for now. However, at the very least, please reach out to someone who cares about you the most.

A good friend can go a long way. You know, like Nijika to Bocchi. Every person deserves a Nijika in their lives. Sometime, all we need is someone who shows us that we’re worthy for our existence, even if we haven’t done a single thing. If you’re not a NEET, then be a Nijika for someone, that could mean the whole world for them.

  29. I haven’t looked at the Spring season yet, but I know that there will be at least 6 shows I might cover on my blog. The question is, how I am going to cover all 6.

I know I have been lazy with not replying all the comments from the Winter season, since it has been not a great season with the lack of shows to cover, but I will catch up with them soon and get some reviews and editorials out before the Spring season kicks off in April.

  35. Hey! by the end of January, this blog is four months old. Much young, such baby. If this blog were a cat, it’s now entering its social development phase. Meaning, I think I should seriously consider guest posting.

For the most part, I only write for another blog owned by an acquaintance of mine, menulis.id. I generally cover literary works, bits of history, and what not on their English section. But, I’ve been experiencing writer’s block recently. Sometimes the words just won’t pop in.

Writing for my own blog seems fun so far. All I write is based on shower thoughts and some weeb discussion with my friends. Also, I didn’t expect to get my first monthly 1k traffic. Hey! I guess that’s an achievement in and of itself. For the longest time, I never knew how to research what topic to write. So, I write my posts purely out of my enjoyment, and don’t really consider how much traffic that I expect.

    Anime Blog To Build Portfolio?

This is me looking at LinkedIn.

But, aligning with the original purpose of this blog, I’m steadily getting the hang of blogging overall. Heck, I hope this kind of blog can count as a portfolio. I’m pretty much a blank slate in terms of job experience anyway. It’s tough receiving rejection email every day. So, it’s still grinding time for me. Ganbatte myself!

When I browse for job openings, I occasionally search for anime content writer jobs. But, what I notice is companies often just want writers who write about Jujutsu Kaisen, One Piece, or Dragon Ball. Is this because of the hype and large fandom? But, come on now, ain’t there a lot of great anime other than those?

My Concerns With Corporate Anime Journalism And Self-Owned Blogs

Chasing all those stats must be hard.

When multiple big websites only post about three well-known anime, it gets boring, right? (This guy wrote this while fully aware he only writes about Frieren). I don’t know, maybe they’re looking for the most organic traffic. After all, they’re companies and have to pay their employees. So, I turn my attention to independent bloggers, like myself.

There are some very lively anime blogs, I follow several of them on WordPress. Some of you guys occasionally interact with me too, which is lovely, thank you. However, much to my dismay, there are many… too many, anime blogs that have either stopped posting, or has been in hiatus since forever. As a new anime blogger, I say what in the world happened? Did this niche get an apocalypse or something?

Anyway, I stumbled on chikorita157‘s and Irina posts about this. Hmm, seems like the situation is rather bleak overall. I wonder, though, what could’ve caused this? Are all anime writers sucked into those anime corporate reviewers? A plausible hypothesis. After all, when I clicked some of their writers’ profiles, they used to have anime blogs as well. However, when I visit their blogs, what I mostly found were barren blogs with no post since 2019.

    So, What’s Next?

I understand the trend in anime blogging has changed, and it’s good for those who found a career in anime journalism. Although, I wish I could relive the height of anime blogging. I remember around ten years ago, when I attended high school. I often looked for anime reviews and all that I saw were pretty much bloggers.

Some anime bloggers that I follow might be the same ones that I visited back then. Do I want to be like them? Kinda. I was skeptical about my writing quality, though. So, I asked Reddit (like the proper adult that I am) about it. The response were mostly encouraging, which made me more enthusiastic about this hobby.

However, I don’t really share this blog on the platform that I’m most active in, Twitter (or X as this grammar checker keeps correcting me, leave me alone Grammarly!). People who know me on Twitter are mostly my real life friends, and not all of them are kind to the anime community in general.

When I say I discuss anime with friends, that means online friends. I love being a weeb, but it’s still something that I keep on the online world for the most part. Although, I do hope this anime blog will get me somewhere, someday.

  36. Hey! by the end of January, this blog is four months old.

  37. I finally updated my behind the scenes post on what I use to blog about Anime. It has some reasoning behind my hosting changes. On February 19th, it will be 15 since I started blogging about Anime. Wait, 15 years?

  39. For a while now, I have been using the ActivityPub plugin with the hope of more people commenting on my blog posts. Now that 2.0 comes with proper comments threading, I am also boosting my posts from my blog that has ActivityPub enabled.

To make a comment, you want to reply to the boosted post from @[email protected] (you can also follow this account to follow my blog) or @[email protected] (for my side Anime blog). Note that I need to manually approve the comments for it to show up on my blog.

Don't reply to the link sharing posts that come after I publish a post if you want to comment. A comment won't be made on the blog if this happens.

  41. It actually seems that Guardian Enzo is on Bluesky, bsky.app/profile/guardianenzo. or is he? The posts are mirrored from his Twitter, but it could be impersonation.

I'm actually not surprised the horrible interactions/follower count, the account doesn't even have a profile pic or verified domain.

I just asked the account if it was legit, let's see what happens.

  42. CW: Rant about RandomC

I used to rely on the massive amount of screenshots that Random Curiosity used to have for current anime, but with GuardianEnzo posting lots of stuff separately, and the dismal state of the tagging (almost all posts are 'first impressions' all the way to the finale), it's getting painfully difficult to navigate between episodes of the same series.

Not many comments appear on the blog anymore either.

Anyone know of any good screencap heavy blogs?

  43. If you haven't noticed, I have been testing Activity Pub support on Kireina Yuri (kireinayuri.com), which is my sideblog that I write reviews on Anime I don't cover on my main blog, manga and JDrama reviews.

You can follow my blog on the Fediverse (yes, through your Mastodon/Misskey/Firefish account) directly at @[email protected] and get the latest posts. You can also comment directly by replying to that blog post.

The same is now enabled on my main blog at chikorita157.com at @[email protected]. I’m always looking for new aways to improve the engagement on my blog (with comments) as we head to the new future of social networking and not relying on big platforms.

Note: You can load posts by copying the URL to the post, pasting it into the search field. Afterwards, you can comment using your Mastodon account by replying to it.

Note: All comments made via Mastodon/Misskey/Firefish needs approval first before they appear on the blog.

I have upgraded the server so it can handle users following my blog in the Fediverse. I noticed that while having the plugin enabled on both blogs, it caused the Wordpress site to become inaccessible due to the excessive load since the ActivityPub plugin uses a lot of CPU. Updating the plan to one with two cores solved the issue.

  44. Wordpress dot Com blogs can now join the Fediverse.

    wordpress.com/blog/2023/10/11/

Also, before you enable support for Fediverse on your Wordpress Blog, whether you are self-hosted WordPress blog or on Wordpress dot Com, make sure you import the Fedinuke list (paste it in the text box field.under “Disallowed Comment Keys” in the Discussion settings under Settings on the WordPress Dashboard.). This will prevent worst of the worst servers from leaving comments on your blog.

  45. FYI to all anime bloggers. If you are self hosting, you can block ChatGPT from stealing your content. WordFence can help you or adding an entry to robots.txt

For Wordpress.com users, I don’t think this is possible. The only way to have your content not used for AI purposes is migrate your blog to a Wordpress.org installation with a hosting provider.

  46. I have set up a new a.gup.pe group, Anime Blogging.

    @animeblogging

You can put this handle at the in your auto-sharing post to have the posts sent out to anyone following the group in the Fediverse. You can follow the group to hopefully, receive new blog posts of Anime or Japanese related as they come.
