  2. On February 10th, the Educational Bookshop in Occupied East Jerusalem was raided by Israeli police - books were confiscated and the owners Mahmoud and Ahmad Muna were arrested.
    (theguardian.com/world/2025/feb)

Today, around 11:30am local time, police raided the Educational Bookshop again, confiscating more books and arresting Ahmad's father (aged 61) who was tending to the shop at the time.
Here is a local story on the second raid:
    haaretz.com/israel-news/2025-0

What the story does not contain is a list of the confiscated books (later returned). I was at the store when the books were returned and was able to get pictures, which I attach here.

Note: Among the books they confiscated were a book on rock climbing in the West Bank (???), books by Banksy, Joe Sacco (Safe Area Gorazde - a book on BOSNIA, not Israel), Noam Chomsky, and Ilan Pappe.

I'm sorry, I don't have time to #alttext these photos. Please do so if you can and I'll happily add it to the post!
I'd also like to make these into a list with links to descriptions of them at their publisher.

As an educator, this should cross a red line for all educators. It is nothing compared to the scholasticide and genocide in Gaza, but the lack of pretext for raids like this on a bookshop peacefully operating for 40 years should get everyone's attention.

Here is a link to the Educational Bookshop website if you'd like to learn more about them: educationalbookshop.com/

  3. While I'm waiting for the exercises muse to kick in 😉 (for me to notice my meds working better), I'm scrolling through the time line.
    I see some lovely snaps.
Some I will just like, as they're lovely but not my "cup of tea" (I'm *very* weird when it comes to boosting, sorry), and some I wanna boost and then...
There is no Alt text... 😔
I have Friendos that use a screen reader, so for me, I'll only try to boost when there's an Alt text.
Though I don't always check the quality of the Alt text provided. So if they suck, I'm sorry... I don't have unlimited spoons, so when theres an Alt, I often just assume that the person did their best to make it good... 😊

Please peeps, be inclusive and use Alt texts... There is a tag that you can use for asking others to make an Alt text for you. I think it's #AltForMe 🤔 or something like that.... When people then see that and help you with providing a text, then you can edit the Toot and add that text. Don't forget to credit the person that helped you out! 😉

Please :bear_flowers: use alt. Then I can boost more (and maybe feel more comfortable while I do that...). 😊

  4. Ello sweet and lovely Friendos 💜

I'm trying to boost more of your awesome toots!
    But......
These days, it feels like less people are using some decent Alt texts...
    Please! Use them!
If you struggle to describe the image, just ask for help with it. 😊 Use the hashtag like #Alt4me and some people may be able to help.
For those that don't mind using AI, they can be helpful in creating Alt texts as well. Not always very accurate 😉 but it can give a good idea of how/what to write with your image.
I will like toots without Alt but I won't boost them.
Some of my friends are dependent on screen readers so they "kinda need" the text bits... Please, pretty please, use decent Alt texts.
I know mine aren't always the best. I know and feel bad about it. But I keep trying...

  5. TL;DR I won't boost without alt texts. And sometimes I boost without checking Alt texts. 😔

I've been following some awesome people since I started my new account here. 😊 And some followed me and that's awesome as well, thanks for that!

    :blobcatdance:

Some of you awesome Tooters have shared great pictures! And I would love to boost them! But...

I'm a silly Pixy that likes images and videos to have an Alt text. Not just "screenshot from game X" or "sunset", but a but more information would be nice. I don't always see the alt texts, so sometimes I do boost when I see some Alt is included. But no Alt text means no boost, sorry!

Some dear friends depend on screen readers. And I don't want to exclude them in the toots I share. So if I liked your image but didn't boost and you didn't have any Alt text... That could be a reason. Or maybe I just liked it. 😇

And I sorry to my screen reading friends if I missed the alt text and boosted something with an alt text that didn't make sense. Sometimes I don't have the spoons and I'll just boost when I see the image in my app that means "alt text provided". I'm trying to be inclusive but yeah, sometimes I fail. Sorry!

Thanks for reading and caring! 😁

  6. I love to boost your awesome #gaming toots.
But... Without an alt text for images/videos I won't. 😔
Several gaming friends rely on those descriptions to enjoy the posts I share. So please do all you can to include these people in the gaming tooting fun as well!

    Thanks ever so much!

  7. CW: Long post: why I'd like to see more alt text and how it will benefit you.

Okay #GameDev folks especially, but also everyone who follows me: can we talk about #AltText for a second? I know it cab be hard, especially when there's a complicated video or gif. If it were trivial, then instead of having this conversation, I'd be replying with image IDs myself whenever I wanted to boost something that doesn't have them. So they do take effort. But there are several great reasons to put in that effort:

    1. It's a simple ethics test thay you pass or fail with every post: "do I care enough about the access needs of blind users to include alt text?" Many many people end up answering this with some version of "they couldn't play my game anyway/there aren't very many blind people so they don't matter/I don't have the energy right now/etc." To which I say: "message received: when it's inconvenient, you will abandon vulnerable minorities. Your thing might be cool, but you're not the kind of person I want to follow, and I don't want to broadcast your stuff to my followers since that's the opposite of the ethics I want to exemplify." Note that this is also a good reason not to boost others' stuff that's missing alt text, since your feed ends up sending the same message.

    2. The exercise of adding alt text forces you to be more intentional about the message your images/videos send. Especially if you're doing screenshots of your own stuff, when you write alt text you'll sometimes see little improvements that can be made to the presentation, like something important that ended up just out of frame, or a video that's awkward to describe because of the order it introduces things. So adding alt text will actually help your marketing.

    3. Alt text helps in many situations, not just in reaching blind users. Maybe you're on the bus and can't hear a video, but alt text let's you get the gist. This is another way in which alt text improves you're reach. In my client, I've got image loading only on click-through to save bandwidth & reduce clutter, so I see a lot of posts that look like the attached image. I'm usually only going to look at your image if the alt text is interesting.

I'm hoping to see more alt text over time, since I know many people are really just ignorant of this issue, not actually callous. If you have a lot of trouble with alt text (conflicting access needs do exist!) there are hashtags you can use to request help like #AltTextPlease .

Edit: forgot the attachment first time around.
Edit 2: ironically, I forgot the image caption in my first edit! But a that's great reason to remind you that you can edit a post to add a caption to an image if you forgot!

  8. There is a lot of amazing art today but most don't have alt text! I've been reluctant to boost and like because there isn't any alt text. I even found this amazing black and white piece that I now adore but no alt text. I'm starting a new hashtag for this lol. #AltTextPlease

  9. @SmudgeTheInsultCat

, please. Or please use a hashtag like # CaptionsHelp or # AltTextHelp

  10. @fsf Please can you add alt text to the images you use. It makes your accoutn mroe accessible to followers. When the image contains text that is a portion of your message, the message is lost for those with low or no vision.
