  1. After a recent run of reading new books I've switched to re-reading some older ones from the collection and have started with Alastair Reynolds, hitting the stand-alone novels first before I plough through the Revelation Space universe. Finished House of Suns earlier today following on from Century Rain and Pushing Ice, and next up is Terminal World.

  7. Read "Revelation Space" by Alastair Reynolds, a story about some future space people investigating the demise of an extinct civilization.

Some of the people are software uploads or implants in other people's brains, or infectious biological agents and things.

The story is galactic in scale across time and space with good world building, a good tale weaving of elements together.

I liked the scene where the woman falling to her death in a lift-shaft remembered she was on a space-ship which only had gravity coz of engine thrust, so saved herself turning the engines off with a wrist controller.

Trouble is I came to it infrequently with long gaps and so struggled to keep track of what's going on quite a bit. Lots of different elements to keep track of.

My fault, should try and concentrate harder and remember things.

  9. ‘Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days’ Explores the Grimness of Revelation Space

Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days (2003) by Alastair Reynolds collects two novellas set in the Revelation Space universe. Each story is has its own identity, yet they share elements in common that bind them together well. Short, sharp, and at times brutal Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days captures the reader’s attention and never lets go.

When Richard Swift receives an offer from an old friend to explore an alien artefact on the edge of human space he knows he should turn it down. But Richard can never rejct such a challenge. On the barren planet of Golgotha the blood spire defies all attempts at understanding its mysteries. Or the reason it exists at all. As Richard and his team work their way through the spire the mystery not only deepens but becomes more dangerous.

On the isolated ocean world of Turquoise, Naqi works studying the Pattern Jugglers. Naqi hopes to become part of the Moat project when two things happen. A lighthugger is approaching and her sister Mina dies. For the two years it takes the lighthugger to arrive Naqi continues her work but always in her thoughts is the memory of her sister. When the lighthugger arrives Naqi is given the job of escorting around the Moat. Naqi has her suspicions about the Ultra crew but the truth is not what she expects.

The stories of Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days are not closely related in plot or characters. However, they share the unifying theme of deception and betrayal. Reynolds uses this theme to tell personal stories set against the background of greater events. And he tells them well.

Like all of Reynolds stories Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days is full of technical marvels and wonderful ideas. However, this isn’t what makes his stories great. It is the characters and their hold on the reader that makes Reynolds’ stories so good. This collection is no exception.

In Diamond Dogs the protagonist, Richard Swift, is portrayed as a bored dilettante, at first. First impressions can be decieving, though. It becomes quickly apparent that Richard has hidden depths and talents. Reynolds writes his characters with a level of reality that makes their actions, whether logical or illogical, feel real. It’s Reynolds grasp that people, no matter their motivations, cannot be fully understood that puts his stories on a level beyond the ordinary.

    Alastair Reynolds

Turquoise Days is no different. Naqi is a character full of regret over the death of her sister. Like many people that blame themselves for such things her grief colours her actions in both obvious and subtle ways. Whether Naqi realises this or not.

Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days has Reynolds’ trademark action. Intense and violent, often in surprising ways, each story uses this to drive the plot without wallowing. Reynolds’ action is vivid and engaing but used to colour events but is not the focus.

Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days offers an excellent introduction into Reynold’s Revelation Space universe for the uninitiated and a deeper look for existing fans. These stories are dark and unsettling but entertain as well. Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days is a treat all readers whether an SF fan or not.

  10. Read Alastair Reynolds' "House of Suns", a sci-fi novel with a galaxy populated by humans and robots who can't travel faster than light so live millions of years often spent in abeyance or stasis of some kind.

A few humans clone themselves thousands of times and do loops of the galaxy, meeting up to merge memories every 200 kiloyears or so. The shatterlings.

I thought it was really good and engaging. Mysterious questions of the Absence affecting the next-door galaxy and the attempted destruction of the Gention Line of shatterlings leaving just a handful of them to figure out who tried to wipe them out and why. A story spanning a galaxy and a hundred thousand years.

    👍

  12. Alastair Reynolds remains of my favorite science-fiction writer. "Eversion" is an easier read than every novel set in his Revelation Space series. This entertaining novel starts slow and gains more and more intensity until the end, which I found very emotional

  14. I finished reading Machine Vendetta by Alastair Reynolds.

It was great getting caught up with Prefect Dreyfus. This was a solid book, though probably not my favorite in this portion of Revelation Space.

Ingvar Tench was one of Panoply's most experienced operatives. So why did she walk alone and virtually unarmed into a habitat with a vicious grudge against her organization?

As his colleagues pick up the pieces, Dreyfus must face his conscience. What does Tench's misadventure tell him about an enemy he had hoped was dormant?

  20. It was #WorldBookDay yesterday, but I wasn't feeling well so better late than never!

Currently reading: Aurora Rising by #AlastairReynolds

It's actually part 5 of a #SciFi series but also fine as a standalone, which is good because I've not read any of the others!

I like going into books knowing nothing about them, and am still only about 80% of the way through but thoroughly enjoying it. The plot is great, starting off small-scale and opening up as the story unfolds.

The world as we're first introduced to it is intriguing and quite forcefully reminded me of the Fediverse in lots of ways!

The writing is also excellent for the most part, with occasional odd moments where the author seems determined to explain a concept that isn't really that relevant, or was obvious from context anyway. But scifi authors gonna scifi author.

The only other one of his I've read is a much shorter book called Eversion, which was a 10/10 until almost the end where it went massively downhill. So trying not to get my hopes up too much, but fingers crossed this one keeps up the quality 🤞

  22. I have finished reading Galactic North by Alastair Reynolds. Another good collection of short stories. It was good to get some more time with Nevil Clavain, and to see some of the Sol system events that really kicked everything off. Nightingale reminded me a lot of Diamond Dogs - it's a bit like if Rendezvous With Rama were a horror story.

If you've invested time in reading the Revelation Space books, this is a worthwhile addition.

Set in the Revelation Space universe, this is the first short story collection by the author who has been called "one of SF's best and most ambitious novelists." Includes: "Great Wall of Mars," "Glacial," "A Spy in Europa," "Weather," "Dilation Sleep," "Grafenwalder's Bestiary," "Nightingale," and "Galactic North."

  26. I finished reading Turquoise Days by Alastair Reynolds.

This one was not horror-like, which was nice. Always good to see the Pattern Jugglers feature in a story. Such an interesting idea, and so little is known about them in the series.

Between the two I think Diamond Dogs was probably my favorite of these two stories. Both great additions to the universe though. Also seemed there may have been a reference to Diamond Dogs in Turquoise Days.

Diamond Dogs turned out to be a bit more body horror than I had expected. Interesting read, but glad it wasn't expanded out into a full length novel.
