  1. @blake

    Hi Blake!

In my case, I get an error and never see anything.

I don't want to get into a debugging session, but here are my observations:

    - I'm using Vivaldi
    - I have cookies and site data turned off for all sites but a few
    - in particular, cookies and site data are blocked for 1password.com
    - when I follow the link in the toot, all I see is this error text: "Application error: a client-side exception has occurred while loading 1password.com (see the browser console for more information)."

    I didn't investigate further.

To sell - To give something in exchange for something else, usually money

    - French: vendre

    - Spanish: vender

    - German: verkaufen

    - Dutch: verkopen

    - Danish: at sælge

    - Norwegian: å selge

In German and Dutch, the prefix ver- has a negative connotation.

The old English and Norse origins of "to sell" relate it to give /up, deliver, surrender, hand over, and even to sacrifice.

Sounds like selling something was not a thing you did willingly.

violence - use of force to hurt

    - French: violence

    - Spanish: violencia

    - German: Gewalt

    - Dutch: geweld

    - Danish: vold

    - Norwegian: vold

But the Old English word - because of course they had violence before the Norman conquest - is hǣste, which is related to vehemence, fury, and hate.

    - French: castor

    - Spanish: castor

    - German: Biber

    - Dutch: bever

    - Danish: bæver

    - Norwegian: bever

Shows again how closely related English is to nordic and germanic languages.

    Merry Christmas

    - French: Joyeux Noël

    - Spanish: Feliz Navidad

    - German: Frohe Weihnachten

    - Dutch: Vrolijk kerstfeest

    - Danish: Glædelig jul

    - Norwegian: God Jul

Christmas: the day mass is said for Christ (see also Michaelmas, Martinmas, etc); in Dutch also called "kerstmis".
French and Spanish refer to Jesus' birth.
Germans wish you to be merry on two holy nights: 25 and 26 dec.
Yule was a Norse pagan feast, "adopted" by Christianity -> the curt "good yule".

Money - that which (they say) makes the world go round

    - French: argent, monnaie

    - Spanish: dinero

    - German: Geld

    - Dutch: geld

    - Danish: penge

    - Norwegian: penger

The French refer to "money" in general as silver, but "monnaie" is used for coins, or change, and a porte-monnaie is a purse holding paper cash and coins.

Penge is from Old Norse pen(in)gar or penning. In Dutch, the treasurer of an org is called a "penningmeester", or the manager of the money.

Index finger - the finger next to the thumb

    - French: index

    - Spanish: dedo índice

    - German: Zeigefinger

    - Dutch: wijsvinger

    - Danish: pegefinger

    - Norwegian: pekefingeren

So the index finger is used for pointing, or "indicating".

  9. Today we recorded one of our longest #RandomEncounters episodes to date, but the complex topic of sexualised violence in adult games simply required it.

We discussed studies, sexual health, kinks, politics, and quoted the experts who kindly gave us interviews.

Fleet - a group of vessels, usually on sea but also on the street or in the air, under unified control

    - French: flotte

    - Norwegian: flåte

    Interesting uniformity.

    fart - expulsion of gas

    - French: pet

    - Spanish: pedo

    - German: Furz

    - Dutch: scheet

    - Danish: prut

    - Norwegian: fjert

You can tell this word is not far from the word for "poop".

The Gernan is closes to the English. As for the Dansih, there is a Dutch word, "prut", which means "muck".

speed - how fast something is going; also: velocity

    - French: vitesse

    - Spanish: velocidad, rapidez

    - German: Geschwindigkeit, Tempo

    - Dutch: snelheid, vaart, spoed

    - Danish: hastighed, fart

    - Norwegian: fart

The German "Tempo" is used in music as well as in car traffic.

You feel that speed is important to the Dutch, they had their own words early on, and multiply so. They also have "haast", or hastyness.

  13. #RandomEnglishWord

    acceleration - increase of speed

    - French: accélération

    - Spanish: aceleración

    - German: Beschleunigung

    - Dutch: versnelling

    - Danish: acceleration

    - Norwegian: akselerasjon

Scandinavian languages go with the romance languages, while German and Dutch words contain their words for "fast" ("schleunig" and "snel", respectively).

  15. A quick announcement regarding the recent developments with Steam's new guidelines, Collective Shout, and their attempts to silence the critics of their censorship campaign:

We're staying on top of things, but instead of constantly sharing snippets of information, me and Gloria are going to record a long podcast episode once we have a better understanding of what's going on.

    We'll keep you posted.

  16. The owner walked up right as I was tooting just now. We talked for a few minutes and she told me stories about being in the LF bleachers in the 70's and 80's.

I got to tell her how a kid that grew up deep in Cardinals country grew up as a Cubs fan.

    - French: mer

    - Spanish: mar

    - German: Meer

    - Dutch: zee

    - Danish: sø

    - Norwegian: sjø

Not sure why German follows the Romance languages.
Not only that, Germans have "See" for lake, which is "meer" in Dutch, always good for some cross border confusion.

    - French: fenêtre

    - Spanish: ventana

    - German: Fenster

    - Dutch: raam, venster

    - Danish: vindue

    - Norwegian: vindu

Wind, or air, also features in the Spanish.
The Dutch could had the poetic "windoog" but no: they went with a description how it's built, a word related to the English "rim".

#street - public thoroughfare in city or town (includes sidewalks, if any)

#road - public thoroughfare connecting cities and towns

    - Spanish: calle, camino

    - German: Straße, Weg

    - Dutch: straat, weg

    - Danish: gade, vej

#eradicate - destroy completely, literally "take out the root"

    - French: éradiquer

    - Spanish: erradicar

    - German: auslöschen

    - Dutch: uitroeien

    - Danish: udrydde

    - Norwegian: utrydde

Each word contains that language's word for "out".
"Löschen" means to delete or clear
"Rydde" means to clear or tidy.
The Dutch "roeien" is not to do with rowing but with "rooien" or harvesting root vegetables and, you know, tulip bulbs
