Today we recorded one of our longest #RandomEncounters episodes to date, but the complex topic of sexualised violence in adult games simply required it.

We discussed studies, sexual health, kinks, politics, and quoted the experts who kindly gave us interviews.

Jean Ketterling and her colleagues are looking for "game makers affected by the 'NSFW' policy changes on Steam and itch.io for a survey. This survey is part of a broader project on the factors that shape the production, distribution, and consumption of porn games." More information can be found here: www.pppproject.com

Jean is doing great work and I highly recommend reaching out to her and participating in this survey.

Over on Bluesky, there's a lively discussion about games journalism and its reluctance to cover adult content:

https://bsky.app/profile/acvalens.net/post/3m3kftj4eic2n

There are many good responses in the comments, but Ana and I actually brought up most of these points back in 2021 in an episode of my podcast "Random Encounters".

Since the content is still relevant, I asked for permission to publicly share the audio file (which used to be Patreon-exclusive content). You can listen and download it here:

Game developers fear for the future of games with LGBTQ themes, which is leading some to pursue alternate forms of distribution:

https://www.polygon.com/steam-adult-games-physical-releases-parfum-nostalgique/

"So where are we supposed to go if we can't trust our platforms to have our backs? [...] I don't know the answer to that, but I think it would be wise if we all took some steps to take back the means of how our work is distributed in some way."

Today I'm starting my deep dive into the complex topic we've picked for the next episode of Random Encounters: Sexualised violence in (interactive) #Pornography .

Gloria and I always take great care in doing proper research, but in this case it's particularly important, as fictional depictions of sexualised violence have been the source of major controversies and often held responsible for real-world crimes. Most recently, #CollectiveShout made this particular claim — without proving empirical evidence — to deplatform #AdultGames .

"UK Gouvernment: Payment Processors Can Ban NSFW Content
According to the UK treasury, payment processors are in the right and the gouvernment has no plans to step in. This puts it in direct contrast to what artists and the UK games industry have asked for."

In other news: As mentioned previously, Collective Shout tried to have our petition "Save games from censorship" removed, making false claims about "defamatory" statements.

I was forced to spend some time during my vacation to provide evidence for each and every statement, but as we did plenty of research before writing the petition text, I could list numerous sources – including the organisation's own website – and the Change.org Help Center clearly ruled in our favour.

[P] Oh! Also? Forgot to mention that SWERFs are a part of Collective Shout, too. They're very anti-women's autonomy and anti-abortion. So, yes, if any far-right idiot tries to claim that CS is "da woak agenda," please feel free to punch them... With the truth, I mean. Punch them figuratively with the truth. I'm definitely not not advocating for violence against the far-right. Haha. Always punch Nazis. With a left-hook of the truth.

#collectiveshout #adultgames #erotica #woke #farright

-7

[P] This has Collective Shout in panic mode as some far-right groups are realising they were betrayed by ther own. "Nuh-uh! Not us!" says CS, trying to deny and walk back things they very publically said, which were recorded by a multitude of news sites. So, it'll be interesting to see how this develops. But yes, "freeze peach" means "Say only things I like!" to the far-right, and they often disagree about what they like.

#collectiveshout #adultgames #erotica #woke #farright

-6

[P] What makes this funnier though is that one far-right hate group is denying far-right gooners their sexy bunny-girl games. "it da woak agenda." Nah, mate. It's your own idiotic friends. The right is nothing if not self-sabotaging. The thing is is that this was always about LGBTQIA+ & furries, but Collective Shout couldn't frame it that way. It'd look too sus, so they went after adult games in general, all erotic games.

#collectiveshout #adultgames #erotica #woke #farright

-5

[P] And every time the far-right loses, it only amplifies that pettiness. And there are a lot of occasions where they lost to both furries & LGBTQIA+ alike. It's juat this long-standing hatred for anyone who isn't likw them, whom they see as "deviant." It really shouldn't surprise anyone that Collective Shout is a far-right hate group. I suspected that might've been the case initially, and every investigation turned up the same evixence.

#collectiveshout #adultgames #erotica #woke #farright

-4

[P] Who'da thunk it? That it WASN'T the left getting LGBTQIA+ games pulled. Oh, the shock of i5 all. I might faint. I mean, targeting furries too as the far-right has a hate-boner for them aswell for some reason?? I mean, I know this goes back to the days of Something Awful and how the furries won the Internet, but are they really petty enough to still hold a grudge? It's the far-right, of course they are. They're murderously petty.

#collectiveshout #adultgames #erotica #woke #farright

-3

[P] So who are they, then? Collective Shout is a group whose primary cinnections are TERF, Christian Chatholic/Puritannical, and far-right interests. The goal of Collective Shout was always to target LGBTQIA+ games, which is why this has hir those most adversely, and why they were delisted from itch.io en masse before people rioted. This is a pearl-clutching far-right hate group targeting trans and LGBTQIA+ in general. Funny that, eh?

#collectiveshout #adultgames #erotica #woke #farright

-2

[P] It's time to talk about Collective Shout. Who are they? Well, if you listen to far-right lemmings whose approach ia to prosely5ise firar and research never? It's part of the "woke agenda" to take their sexy bunny girl games away. This is what makes the actual reality of Collective Shout a delicious thing of brauty. So, are Collective Shout a bunch of lefties who hate bunny girls? As you've probabky guessed by now, the answet is no.

For the next two days, you can unlock 13 amazing adult games for free as part of GOG's Freedom To Buy campaign. Included in the lineup is House Party, a game I star in!

I am incredibly honored to stand alongside GOG, Eek Games, and so many other bold, creative voices in adult gaming fighting for free expression.

Participate in this campaign, boost this post, and help push back against the threat MasterCard and Visa pose to our civil liberties.

We're making progress! The German Games Industry Association has finally issued a statement, taking a stance for artistic freedom:

https://www.gamesmarket.global/en/business/german-games-association-game-md-felix-falk-expression-and-diversity-must-not-be-targeted-f75c49d9b40477591eb1c8e9d84c4872

"[It] is fundamental to games as a cultural medium. Any restrictions imposed by payment service providers or gaming platforms must not exceed the legal limits. [...] creative forms of expression or certain themes in games, such as diversity, must not be targeted by individual interests or campaigns from particularly vocal groups, as is currently being observed on Steam or itch.io."

Please sign this petition to oppose censorship from payment processors and extremists!

Are you working in games and do you want to take a stand against censorship?

I'm currently in the process of setting up a petition to fight against payment processors' and extremists' influence on online stores and the content they're allowed to sell.

I know there's already a pretty successful petition making its rounds, but what it neglects to mention is that a) the current developments do not only affect adult games, but also MANY (SFW) queer games and b) there's no way to know where the line will be drawn, if our freedom of expression through games will be limited even further.

Now I'm looking for people who'd like to be mentioned as initial signers, as I think a petition signed and publicly supported by people working in games will have more impact.

If you're interested, please get in touch and I'll send you the petition text.

Thanks to the various people who have been poking me about the #pornocalypse news on Steam (July 15) and itch.io (today). Pornocalypse has been an ErosBlog reporting beat since 2013 but I'm tired and broke; not claiming this post adds *much* to the narrative, just nails it into my dozen-year timeline of reports, for the record:

New record: We just wrapped up this month's episode of Random Encounters, which has a runtime of... 3 hours and 15 minutes. Oof. There was just so much to explore with the legacy of the Emmanuelle franchise, the game adaptation, and the fascinating work of its creator Muriel Tramis, the first Black female game developer.

These kind of discoveries are the best part of this job.
