Gloria and I always take great care in doing proper research, but in this case it's particularly important, as fictional depictions of sexualised violence have been the source of major controversies and often held responsible for real-world crimes. Most recently, #CollectiveShout made this particular claim — without proving empirical evidence — to deplatform #AdultGames .

In other news: As mentioned previously, Collective Shout tried to have our petition "Save games from censorship" removed, making false claims about "defamatory" statements.
I was forced to spend some time during my vacation to provide evidence for each and every statement, but as we did plenty of research before writing the petition text, I could list numerous sources – including the organisation's own website – and the Change.org Help Center clearly ruled in our favour.

We're making progress! The German Games Industry Association has finally issued a statement, taking a stance for artistic freedom:
"[It] is fundamental to games as a cultural medium. Any restrictions imposed by payment service providers or gaming platforms must not exceed the legal limits. [...] creative forms of expression or certain themes in games, such as diversity, must not be targeted by individual interests or campaigns from particularly vocal groups, as is currently being observed on Steam or itch.io."

Are you working in games and do you want to take a stand against censorship?
I'm currently in the process of setting up a petition to fight against payment processors' and extremists' influence on online stores and the content they're allowed to sell.
I know there's already a pretty successful petition making its rounds, but what it neglects to mention is that a) the current developments do not only affect adult games, but also MANY (SFW) queer games and b) there's no way to know where the line will be drawn, if our freedom of expression through games will be limited even further.
Now I'm looking for people who'd like to be mentioned as initial signers, as I think a petition signed and publicly supported by people working in games will have more impact.

New record: We just wrapped up this month's episode of Random Encounters, which has a runtime of... 3 hours and 15 minutes. Oof. There was just so much to explore with the legacy of the Emmanuelle franchise, the game adaptation, and the fascinating work of its creator Muriel Tramis, the first Black female game developer.
These kind of discoveries are the best part of this job.

A few final throughts about #NoMercy, even though I'm honestly tired of talking about this, because I feel this needs to be said:
The individuals and organisations speaking out about this game without doing proper research first have done both the discourse and themselves a great disservice, because going forward, it will be incredibly difficult to trust them.
A key point of (progressive) political activism is, or should be, honesty. Employing the same tactics as the far-right is a no-go; making false claims, rage-baiting, threatening and dehumanising people, openly asking peers to doxx individuals, and demanding that a piece of media you don't feel comfortable should be removed from the face of the Earth? That's not okay just because you're doing it in the name of some twisted idea of feminism.
A line has been crossed, and there's no coming back from it. I'm disheartened. And I sincerely hope that at least a people of the people involved learned from their mistakes.

Am 22.03. erschien ein Adult Game auf Steam – soweit, so normal. Doch nachdem erst die Presse und dann die Politik auf die Veröffentlichung aufmerksam wurde, ging alles sehr schnell: Verbote in drei Ländern, eine Online-Petition mit 70.000 Unterschriften, wütende Stellungnahmen und die Entfernung des Spiels aus allen Online Stores. Was war der Grund des Anstoßes? „No Mercy“ zeigt schwerpunktmäßig Inzest und sexualisierte Gewaltakte. Das zu kritisieren, ist legitim, aber stattdessen folgten Drohungen, Doxxing, und manche Aussagen, die rhetorisch die Grenze zum Faschismus überschreiten. Wir ordnen in dieser fast zweistündigen Folge die Ereignisse kritisch ein und machen etwas, was scheinbar sonst niemand getan hat: Wir reden über einen Titel, den wir tatsächlich auch gespielt haben.
