Daily old(ish) piece 137!
Imperfect victim
I’m sorry my first ever Alois fanart is angsty, I promise I’ll draw happier times for him so please don’t hate me 🙏
Consider this piece a sort of critique of the way some parts of certain fandoms treat abuse victims that don’t behave as you’d expect an abuse victim to behave. Look, I normally try to stay out of this kind of discourse because it’s not worth my time and energy but, when people can’t see these characters as anything other than slutty gay aesthetic, when they constantly sexualize them and portray them as asking for it and hell, when they go as far as shipping them with their own abusers in ways that are romanticized instead of portrayed as what it actually is, idk man I think they couldn’t be missing the entire point of the work more. I know often the portrayal in the source material doesn’t help like, at all but c'mon man.

Dem Rep. Joyce Beatty of Ohio, a Black woman, called out GOP Rep. Eli Crane for his use of the term "colored people" while he attempted to defend the amendment during a floor debate in the House this Thursday. #EliCrane

Was conflicted about how much I love kazurei as romantic partners vs as simply buddies/in a qpr and co-parents but then I was like… why not both? They’re buddies/in a qpr and co-parents who act as a married couple and sometimes they even smooch 😌

Suddenly remembered how when Buddy Daddies first came out a lot of ppl hated Misaki's guts and thought she was just as bad as Miri's bio dad, I think things have calmed down but back then it really rubbed me the wrong way.
I’ll be honest, I really liked her. Like yes, sending such a young child away on her own with absolutely no supervision was horribly irresponsible. But I just loved how flawed and realistically human she was and I honestly want to see more of this type of character in media. Especially in anime, maybe I just haven’t seen a lot but I feel like we often see either parents who are super loving and caring or awfully abusive, we don’t see a lot of parents that are just trapped in a life they don’t want and tired of holding a facade (it looks like Misaki never abused Miri or even showed her unhappiness around her even though she was on the verge of snapping any minute).
Idk maybe I just sympathised with her because I neither want nor like children and I know I’d hate my life and resent the kid if I was ever forced or coerced into the role of a caretaker, but apparently it was too much asking to have some nuance. It blows my mind that so many ppl thought a trapped, unhappy, desperate abuse victim was on the same level as a human trafficker. I’ve seen some ppl bring up abortion or adoption and I know they had good intentions but afaik the situation isn't as simple in Japan.
I’ve also seen a lot of ppl comment that they wanted Misaki to “work on her issues so that she and Miri could be together again” and all I ask is: why? Why is that necessary? Why is there such a pervasive idea that children are always better off with their mothers? I sincerely think a happy ending would've been for her to get help and get better but NOT get the kid back and I was rlly hoping the writers would go that route, it would've been very refreshing. I wanted the message to be “Not everyone is fit to be a parent and especially not every woman is fit to be a caretaker and there’s more than one type of family”.
And I'm sad that she was killed off but I see why they made the choices they made and they make a lot of sense given the context of the story. I personally don’t have any complaints about the writing but I think Misaki deserved better. I’m sad she died but I understand why it happened, I suppose with her arc going that route it wouldn’t have made sense for her to survive in a show where nobody’s safe from violent criminals who are willing to murder women and children to get them out of their way. Still, I don’t think she needed a big change of heart, I think she was already a great character as she was (it also rubbed me the wrong way that some people started viewing her as a good person only once she started making an effort to do things right but I digress).
I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge fan of the “unwilling parent learns to love their kid and learns to be a good parent so that they can finally be a happy family” narrative. It just doesn’t sit right with me, maybe I’m reading too much into it but the message I get from these kind of stories is that anyone can be a good parent/caretaker with enough help and resources and in the right place mentally and emotionally (ESPECIALLY because that’s an argument people use in real life for why they think everyone should have kids, or hell, even as an anti abortion argument; like that’s not an exaggeration, I’ve seen them saying pretty much the exact same thing), when the sad reality is that sometimes kids are just unwanted. I sincerely wish the show had acknowledged that some people just don’t want to be parents even when they already are, I know it’s not pretty but these things need to be talked about in fiction.
I also think it would’ve fit the story perfectly: we would’ve had an example of horrible abusive parents (Rei’s father), amazing loving parents (Rei and Kazuki themselves) and parents who do their best but would still rather be doing anything else (Misaki herself). Maybe I’m biased, I don’t know, but I’m really starved for this kind of content. As a friend of mine as well as a few other people have said, we need more situations like in Matilda, where the bio parents admit they aren’t fit for the role and happily sign away their parental rights.
(Granted that if Misaki hadn’t popped back into Miri’s life she wouldn’t have died like that, as she got targeted precisely because she was with Miri, that’s why I say I understand why the writers made the choices they made).
I also wish they hadn’t given her cancer if they were going to kill her off anyway, give the poor woman a break lol.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre 1974 or the pioneer in ultraviolence
If today we have a lot of films to choose from when we want to shock ourselves beyond believe: from barely serious, yet distrusting films by Eli Roth through intense hyper-violence by Coralie Fargeat or depressing looks at the world by Lars Von Trier all the way to deranged films like The Serbian Film, in 1970s you had probably only one true contender for such a level of derangeness. And it was the Tobe Hooper's 1974 film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

CW: Part 2 There is something very disturbing about these freedom caucus members' support for Putin, attempts to destroy democracy, social security and whole agencies and their funding by Peter Theil and Koch. "Is this all a continuation of Trump’s January 6th coup attempt and his desire to convert America from a democracy into a despotic strongman-rule nation aligned with Russia?" Is the Anti-McCarthy Crowd in the Bag for the Billionaires, Putin, or Both?

#WantTheirSerfsBack“It's becoming clear now: This is January 6th, Episode II. The Freedom Caucus is demanding debt default, which will spark a ~$15T global financial crisis. COVID was ~$4T. This will only help Putin and his BRICS+/GGC allies.”
Skeptical but curious, I plugged the names of each of the 20 Republicans who voted against McCarthy in the first vote yesterday into a search engine along with the word “Russia.” Here’s what I found about 15 of them:
Andy Biggs voted against legislation to document Russian war crimes in Ukraine, as did Paul Gosar and Scott Perry.
Matt Gaetz, Dan Bishop, Paul Gosar, Ralph Norman, and Scott Perry all voted against suspending normal trade relations with Russia and Belarus.
Dan Bishop, Matt Gaetz, Andy Biggs, Paul Gosar, and Chip Roy all voted against a bill to ban imports of Russian oil and gas.
Those four also voted against legislation to strip Russia from “most favored nation status” by the World Trade Organization.
Paul Gosar and Matt Rosendale both voted against a resolution that reaffirmed US support for Ukrainian sovereignty.
John Brecheen is new to Congress, but when asked by his local newspaper about whether America should support Ukraine against the Russian invasion he replied, “My position is I would not have voted for funding of war.”
Michael Cloud tweeted: “The Biden Admin has ignored a year-long invasion at our southern border but is considering risking the lives of U.S. soldiers to protect Ukraine's border? Ukraine is thousands of miles away.”
Voting against Sweden and Finland joining NATO, a pet Putin peeve, were Michael Cloud, Andy Biggs, Dan Bishop, Lauren Boebert, Matt Gaetz, Bob Good, Ralph Norman, and Chip Roy.
Eli Crane says of the US supporting Ukraine, “This is a war we shouldn’t be involved in,” and it will make the Afghanistan exit “look like child’s play.”
Matt Gaetz tweeted: “Today the House didn't organize. Biggest loser: Zelensky. Biggest winner: U.S. Taxpayers.” He also tweeted: “I’m more concerned with the US-Mexico border than the Russia-Ukraine border. Not sorry.”
Opposing US aid to Ukraine, Matt Gaetz told a CPAC audience: “Why should Americans have to pay the costs for freedom elsewhere when our own leaders won't stand up for our freedom here?”
Paul Gosar tweeted: “Ukraine is not our ally. Russia is not our enemy. We need to address our crippling debt, inflation and immigration problems. None of this is Putin's fault.”
Paul Gosar wrote an open letter to the White House asking President Biden to “refrain from participating in its annually recurring nuclear exercise ‘Steadfast Noon’ in conjunction with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to ‘prevent further escalation.’”
Paul Gosar tweeted: “Putin puts Russia first as he should.”
Mary Miller, Bob Good, Ralph Norman, Andy Biggs, and Matt Gaetz co-sponsored legislation to forbid any further delivery of military equipment to Ukraine.
...
Ralph Norman, who called for Trump to impose “Marshall law” to prevent Biden from being sworn in, first issued a statement on day one of the invasion of Ukraine condemning Russia but then voted “No” on US aid to Ukraine in September and continues to oppose such aid.
...
Matt Rosendale issued a statement saying: “The United States has no legal or moral obligation to come to the aid of either side in this foreign conflict.” He voted against a resolution “supporting the people of Ukraine.” He also introduced legislation blocking any US aid to Ukraine.Byron Donalds voted against US aid to Ukraine.

While none of this proves that the anti-McCarthy forces are getting their marching orders from Putin, it does raise some significant questions about their commitment to the continuation of the current form and nature of our government. I think Dave Troy’s idea is worth taking seriously.Because the outcome he contemplates is something both the rightwing billionaires and Putin could get behind."
