  11. my @PyConUS talk is finally on youtube!! The talk is about the packaging ecosystem and how @pyOpenSci is leveraging the power of community to make packaging simpler for . it's also about how too many options and opinions get in the way of success in our ecosystem 💗

I also wrote a blog post about it here

  12. We're planning to do a bunch of outreach in 2024 in the community of people working with open data and open source energy system models (hopefully with support from NSF POSE and maybe Sloan) and it seems adjacent to the kind of work being done by @pyOpenSci & @leahawasser

Do y'all think this would be a good potential community partnership?

We made a post in their Discourse here:

  13. So proud of Katharina – who I have the pleasure to co-supervise for her PhD. Not only did she hand in her thesis last week, she also got her package #cardsort accepted to @pyOpenSci! 📖 💻 🎉 🎈

If you're doing #UX testing work that involves cardsorting, her package can help you quickly get a look at the clustering results. Check it out at github.com/katoss/cardsort

  17. I’ve written article about - package used for validation: linkedin.com/pulse/do-you-use-

(Sorry that this is on LinkedIn, but I’m trying to reach general audience there - my main goal is to promote the package and @pyOpenSci , and LinkedIn has larger community than my personal blog 😊)

  18. Same here: don't do it!

At #PyInstaller we established a rule to generally not accept reformating code without functional changes. "This means that when looking at patches later, we don’t have to wade through loads of non-functional changes to get to the relevant parts of the patch."

For more detailed reasoning see github.com/pyinstaller/pyinsta

We established this rule 6 years ago, and it is still valid, even while maintainers changed since then.

  19. Status update, #NASATOPS #OpenScience 101:

✅ The ethos of Open Science
    ✅ Open Tools & Resources
    ✅ Open Data
    ✅ Open Code
    🔲 Open Results

This 4th module was about Open Code.

Again, the importance of a Software Management Plan (SMP) for larger projects (like #CIMRL2PAD is).

    And (software) licenses, licenses, licenses!

Can I safely use an LGPL library in my "permissive" software? I need to find out.

Ha! And the module made me discover @pyOpenSci, so that's something!

  20. Good morning, it's the first day of #PyConUS Sprints! Sprints are open to all #PyCon attendees and you don't have to reserve a spot ahead of time, just walk into the room and join the others working on the project.

  22. Learning in action at ! 👀

Yesterday’s workshop showed how to mix conda + pip, simplify ML workflows, and speed up training on cloud or GPU—fast and reproducible.

Thanks to Matthew Feickert, Ruben Arts, and John Kirkham!

We’re back this morning with our packaging workshop. Come demystify packaging: lnkd.in/eBk5cz6i

  24. 📣 Generative AI can support open source workflows, but it can’t fully replace the thought, design, and vision that only a human can implement. It also can’t replace mentorship, care, and compassion—human parts of the tech world that both fuel the open-source ecosystem and strain the fragile social web that supports it.

That's why we are fully committed to emphasizing foundational open source skills, critical thinking and shared open source norms and workflows.

  25. The elements of a Python package include:
    💻 Code
    ✍️ Documentation
    🔍 Tests
    📃 an OSI-approved license
    🧰 Infrastructure

💜 Maintainers are at the core, making sure everything works and is up to date while fixing bugs and addressing user concerns.
