  1. @scalzi Times are changing. When I was little, there was no green lady or animal friends. There was a fruity werewolf, though.

I was in Pittsburgh a couple months ago for #PyConUS2024. I stopped by the Andy Warhol museum, where they had a really cool window display of the original General Mills monster triumvirate.

  2. Has anyone contributed to #pyvideo recently and can give me a hand?

    I found Jim's #PyConUS2024 #py5 talk: pyvideo.org/pycon-us-2024/crea

And found some tutorials, but mine is missing and I'd like to add it (and found the instructions a bit daunting).

  7. Live from PyCon US 2024, the largest Python conference in the world, Microsoft returned to the Expo hall as a Sustaining sponsor with lots of fun presentations, knee deep in the code, and sharing the latest and greatest of what we do in the Python work.

  9. @treyhunner, thanks for suggesting this. I had hoped I'd see Guido speaking when I was at #PyConUS2024 in Pittsburgh, but I didn't even see him around the conference. Somebody told me he was there. (The closest I came to seeing him was the standee.) Videos of his past talks, like this one, make up for that. I've certainly not seen them all, so it's a little like seeing new talks from him, on demand. (I think he wouldn't do in person.)

  10. @leahawasser @pyOpenSci I regret missing the talk(s) about packaging while I was at #PyConUS2024. I'll look for them online. When will videos appear on PyCon's YouTube profile?

  11. I wrote an overview of @pyOpenSci s second (and my second) experience at pyopensci.org/blog/recap-pyos-

we had a great time with a record amount of sprinters, open space attendees AND i gave my first talk! I can't wait for next year!

  12. @rennerocha @pycon I stand corrected! us.pycon.org/2024/speaking/gui says tutorials should be on YouTube in June.

And there were tutorials in earlier years, for example:
    youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2U

I think I mixed up the livestream, which didn't include tutorials :)

  13. @rennerocha @pycon No, only the regular talks and keynotes were recorded and will be available. Not the sponsored talks or summits, although I think the typing summit made ad-hoc recordings.

  14. So #DuckDB was all he rage at #pyconus2024

    duckdb.org/

Using the JSON blobs output by @kensanata's awesome mastodon-archiver.

    Let's give it a whirl!

    Huh! This looks promising!

Now to get some sleep, but tomorrow I will have a good play with learning how to do subqueries on the various fields. Pretty amazing even just with these 2 invocations though! It slurped in the JSON and offered it up as fully structured data with all the fields identified. Swank! :)

  15. @jonafato The #python community is coming around to this idea.

This year at #pyconus2024 the talks were VERY well attended ranging from "a good crowd" to "packed to the rafters" :)

  16. I’m seeing a lot of toots from people who came back from , and tested negative to COVID. Meanwhile, I’m just back from : I don’t think I was ever that sick in my entire adult life, and I was one of maybe two to three attendees wearing a mask.

  17. To all the old friends and the new I've met this year - safe travels wherever you head next! Thanks for making another great experience. And to those of you behind the scenes - thanks for your hard work and dedication so that we can have a community event like this one.
Looking forward to seeing you all next year, if not sooner! Keep in touch!

  18. was really awesome. Got home, l feel so tired let the US on Monday only to get home on Wednesday afternoon. But I have a client project that l have to finish before the end of the month, l have job opportunities follow ups n conversations follow ups from PyCon. The job fair at PyCon was not what l expected but this just echoed my feelings around the job market being dry at the moment.

  19. @esther_alter Your #pyconus2024 talk about the development of Procemon You Must Catch Them All - store.steampowered.com/app/205 was awesome and inspiring! Thank you!

Have you ever considered teaching an IAP course?

The rest of my team at MIT OL who attended really enjoyed it as well.

  20. First thoughts coming back from #PyConUS #pyconus2024: Do you know anyone who works hard but is unrecognized in your #Python community? Nominate them for stuff at the @thepsf ! Don't know what or how? I've written a README here:
    iqbalabdullah.net/en/posts/202

  21. Well, another #PyConUS is done (for me - #Sprints continue for another couple of days!)

It was excellent catching up with old friends and meeting tons of new ones. Pittsburgh was definitely a super cool vibe, 2025 should be fun too.

I'm looking forward to recharging my depleted physical batteries, so I can jump into all the important work we have ahead of us to continue to support this amazing community.

    See you online somewhere!!

  22. Does anyone know what the words on the side of the roof near the central walking area on the terrace are for? It's the scrolling LED text on the top of the David L Lawrence Convention Center in #Pittsburgh. #PyConUS #PyConUS2024

  23. I wrote a short article about my experience as a first-time attendee at PyCon US. Please let me know your thoughts, whether you agree, disagree or have something to add! 😊 lnkd.in/gWWGT6-H

  24. @tonybaloney Loved your #pyconus2024 Parallelism talk so much, but whenever you had your VS Code up there was a WAR happening within my brain:

"Ooh interesting code let's study tha...."

"PUPPIES! LOOK AT THEM cavorting among the trees!"

    FOCUS!

    BUT PUUUPPIEEESSSSS!

    :)

Seriously, great talk. I look forward to playing with subinterpreters and free threads! Thank you!

  25. @hynek I was thinking today that it's a physics problem :)

There were so many people attending who I interact with online who I'd have loved to meet and shake hands with but didn't.

On the other hand, I met a whole lot of amazing new folks and made a few new friends, and isn't that also kind of in the spirit of #pyconus2024 as well? :)

  26. Goodbye #pittsburgh! You’re a great city with a whole lot of character and your own, very unique, friendly charms.

and thank you #pyconus2024 for giving me one heck of an amazing reason to visit :-) it was an experience of a lifetime :-)

  32. Weird morning so far.
    * Shot wide awake at 5:22 am for no discernable reason (thanks body/brain)
    * Pointlessly tried to go back to sleep.
    * Gave up and got up to clear away the work inbox
    * Got a message from a former student of mine I haven't heard from in several years

I think this will need to be remedied with some and sprints today.

  33. Good morning, it's the first day of #PyConUS Sprints! Sprints are open to all #PyCon attendees and you don't have to reserve a spot ahead of time, just walk into the room and join the others working on the project.

    Room 308: RouteE, #PyStack, #MemRay
Room 309: @pyohio call for proposals
Room 310: Robyn, @coveragepy, Cloud Custodian, @numpy Comics
    Room 315: Packaging, commitizen-tools, @pyOpenSci

  34. I am so incredibly inspired and just a bit overwhelmed by #pyconus2024

I met so many amazing people and saw SO MANY great talks.

I'll definitely be re-watching a few while I take the time to process it all and play with some of the amazing new tools I've been exposed to.

What a truly exceptional community we have. I am very grateful for the huge team of people who clearly gave it their all and proud to be a #pythonista :)

  35. Now that we have reached the closing of #PyConUS talks, I'll no longer be posting #PyConUSOpenSpaces announcements.

Thank you to everyone who has walked up to me and recognized me from posting those, my goal is to make them more accessible since we talk a lot about the hallway track.

I'll be sticking around for the #PyConSprints if anyone wants to find me. Can't guarantee I'll be posting room locations for those 😅.

  40. We need help mentoring newbies on git/Github/sprinting in the Intro to Sprinting Workshop tomorrow, Sunday May 19th from 5:30-8:30pm Rm 402. Please join us!

  41. Very interesting to hear how much Hatch from #PyPA has changed over the years. It looks like it's slated to become the app release tool to replace them all, taking on the responsibilities of Twine, Virtualenv, SetupTools, etc. All with a flexible plugin system for future extensibility.
