  1. #30DayMapChallenge – Day 14: Data Challenge (#OpenStreetMap)

Although this year’s challenge doesn’t include a #vintagemap theme, I decided to bring a bit of history into today’s task.

Using #QGIS, I styled current OpenStreetMap data of #RhodeIsland in the aesthetic of 19th‑century maps. The polygon boundaries were given a Raster Image Fill, with sampled colours directly taken from old maps of the area. To enhance the look, I also used geometry generators to style the water bodies.

  3. Day 12: Map from 2125

A worst‑case scenario of 2.5 m reshapes the Netherlands. Built in with SRTM90 via , raster image styled polygons, @maptiler.bsky.social satellite raster tiles, and rendered in using Qgis2threejs.

⚠️ Assumes no adaptation. Collapse of the (a key ocean current regulating climate) not included.

🔥 Urgency: cut greenhouse gases now to avoid this future.

  4. Day 8: Urban

On , I highlight the most paved municipality in the Netherlands: Krimpen aan den IJssel (43.3%), with Kortland-Noord at nearly 53%.

The Imperviousness Map of NL, made by Friedenau Society for Climate Adaptation Services, derived from AHN LiDAR + BGT, was recently released as a 25 cm COG and used in their Neighbourhood Dashboard: buurtdashboard-dev.vercel.app/

Happy to have contributed to this project! 💡

  5. Day 7: Accessibility 🌍✈️

    I mapped visa-free travel:
🛫outbound (where citizens can go) and 🛬inbound (who countries let in).

It reveals global mobility inequality and rising deglobalisation. Borders are tightening due to geopolitics, trade, migration fears & right-wing politics.

This affects researchers & global collaboration.

  10. Day 6: Dimensions Today’s map is a view of Algiers using . Elevation = evapotranspiration! I used a L1 AETI image from 2008 as the elevation model, draped with Google Satellite imagery. Vegetated/agricultural zones rise above urban areas highlighting water dynamics in a striking way.

  15. Day 5: Earth🌍
I mapped gas fields, mines & earthquakes in the Netherlands. ’s gas extraction and ’s mining caused seismic risks, which js now a political issue around damage & compensation. I made this while teaching & @merginmaps in Leek (Groningen) for my company , hired by & . The course is part of a reskilling project for GIS jobs.

  16. Day 4 – Data: My Data
🌍 Every year, a colleague asks me to map the geographic distribution of new MSc students in Water & Sustainable Development at IHE Delft. This year, I used + polygons + plugin to create a showing where our students come from. A beautiful dataset that reflects our global classroom!

  17. #30DayMapChallenge day 2: Lines 🗺️ Mapped Rotterdam’s watery past through street names with pre- and suffixes like singel, boezem, sloot, vaart, haven, and gedempte. These names trace water infrastructure. Some still flowing, others filled in.

  22. 2025 day 1: points

Inspired by my stay in Maastricht performing Carl Orff's with Brabant Koor & the Jussen Brothers.

Today’s map shows Dutch place names ending in -tricht, -drecht, -trecht—derived from Latin Trajectum, meaning river crossing.

    Maastricht = Mosa Trajectum.

    Made with and from @maptiler.bsky.social
