As you probably heard animated PNG images (APNG) have been standardized! So here's a story on how I used an APNG file to cut a phone's power consumption by 10 times in a common scenario during the weeks leading up to the launch of Firefox OS 1.0. We'll talk about webpage layout, rendering, mobile hardware intricacies, driver bugs and of course APNG files. 🧵 1/16

Nvidia has been doing a lot of useless stuff lately, but this is actually a big deal. I wonder what the latency looks like on these switches. Traditionally direct-attach copper has always been the preferred choice for low-latency applications, with optics used for longer connections where latency matters less. I'm curious if this is going to change that.

CW: Zenshu spoilers
Zenshu has been such a bright spot in an otherwise very dark period. I really love this show and what it's doing. And it's got so many brilliant details, like some of its references are rather obvious but others are not. Like the scene at the bar in which Luke asks Unio for advice concerning marriage which I'd say is a fairly subtle reference to the scene between Max and Hikaru in SDF Macross, spitting out drinks and all: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMKcUgd5LC4&t=331s

First time here. I was a bit on edge because I wanted to go with Fire Bomber at first, but then I decided to truly show my age and go back further with Priss and the Replicants from #BubblegumCrisis

If you're into anime, and if you've been into it for a while, you really really want to watch Zenshu. This show is *amazing*. It's at the same time a love letter and a scathing critique of everything that's wrong with the medium. Plus several layers of social critique around it. But also a glorious piece of art and a feast for the eyes. Also brace yourself for references that are more than half a century old. Believe me, it's worth it.

Autocorrect tried to replace "blitter" with "glitter" every time I typed it and it gave me an idea: someone should make an Amiga-themed magical girl anime and call it Blitter Force

I just realized that the song "Asu e touchdown" from the third episode of Bubblegum Crisis contains a fragment of the melody of Bohemian Rhapsody 🤯 . In the episode it starts around 20:40, and you can hear it in the linked video around the 15s mark, right when Nene appears.
I've attached the corresponding clip from Bohemian Rhapsody for comparison. When overlaying the tracks in an audio editor those ~12s match almost perfectly.

I was today years old when I learned about Dragon's Heaven, and it's really one of the most visually stunning pieces of animations I've ever seen. I learned about it via this video, and if you want to watch it you'll need to torrent it because - of course - it's not available anywhere. Oh, and there's a Bubblegum Crisis connection too in there, because good things never come alone.

Yesterday night I was playing "#SKALD: Against the black priory" and at some point I saw a big moth flying a couple of times at the edge of my vision. After a while I decided it seemed too large for a moth, so I raised my eyes and realized it was a bat flying around the room. I bolted to the nearest window and opened it so it could fly away.
This is one immersive horror RPG, but I didn't think it could become *that* immersive.

Shuumatsu no soldier (週末のソルジャー) is one of my favorite #CityHunter songs. It's upbeat, energizing and fun. It's the kind of song I blast when I wake up, for the joy of my kids and much to the dismay of my wife. Shame I can't find the full version on YT

LMAO, someone made a montage of Yusuf Dikeç to City Hunter's Get Wild and it's fantastic.

If #AMD's #Ryzen9000 presentation is to be believed the single-chiplet, 8-cores 9700X will top at 5.5 GHz in a 65W TDP which simply blows my mind.
I don't very much care for the bigger processors because I'm a fan of small, quiet, efficient, cheap computers, not mega-beefy ones.

It must feel really great to launch a game with #Commodore64 -ish graphics, ostensibly inspired by late '80s cRPGs, and the reviews are like:
LONGER THAN SKYRIM MEANER THAN THE WITCHER BIGGER THAN BALDUR'S GATE BESTEST RPG EVER!!!!11!1!1!1

#SKALD: Against the Black Priory looks absolutely fantastic. I can't wait to play it... maybe this summer when I'm on vacation?

There's a new crowdfunding campaign for the #ShadowsOfEsteren #TTRPG (Les Ombres d'Esteren). Esteren is a a medieval, gothic RPG made by a French team. It has a strong focus on storytelling/role-playing and limited but deadly combat. The setting includes fantasy elements that mostly lay hidden from sight and are horrific in nature.
If you're curious the prologue which introduces the game system is available for free: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/109112/Shadows-of-Esteren--Book-0-Prologue

I haven't seen announced here in the fediverse yet, but version 0.6.0 of #sccache was just released:
https://github.com/mozilla/sccache/releases/tag/v0.6.0
sccache is a compilation-caching tool that can massively speed up your builds (and save power!) both locally and in CI. It supports both C/C++ and Rust and is very easy to use. If you're compiling a lot of stuff everyday you should definitely give it a try.
