Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture, Masami Ōbari, 1994
Para los entusiastas de las adaptaciones de los videojuegos de peleas de los años noventa y de la estética clásica de la animación japonesa, este largometraje representa una de las paradas obligadas de la época de oro de la empresa SNK. A diferencia de las dos producciones previas para televisión que se enfocaban en recrear los torneos y la venganza directa contra el jefe criminal Geese Howard, esta entrega opta por construir una trama completamente original que transforma la dinámica habitual en una aventura de búsqueda de tesoros alrededor del mundo, llevando a los personajes a través de distintas localizaciones globales. La historia arranca cuando una joven misteriosa llamada Sulia Gaudeamus busca la protección de Terry Bogard, el legendario lobo hambriento de Southtown, para detener los planes de su hermano gemelo Laocorn, un hombre obsesionado con recolectar las 6 piezas ocultas de la Armadura de Marte, un antiguo artefacto divino que perteneció a sus ancestros y que promete otorgar el poder de un dios a quien logre portarlo por completo.
Bajo la dirección y el diseño de personajes del realizador Masami Ōbari, el filme destaca de manera inmediata por su identidad visual sumamente marcada, caracterizada por trazos estilizados, sombreados dramáticos y secuencias de combates dotadas de una gran fluidez de movimiento. A la travesía de Terry y Sulia se unen de forma rápida su hermano Andy Bogard, el campeón de Muay Thai Joe Higashi y la habilidosa kunoichi Mai Shiranui, permitiendo que la narrativa dosifique la acción a través de enfrentamientos donde se lucen las técnicas especiales extraídas directamente de las salas de arcades. Aunque el argumento central no busca reinventar el género y recurre a varios clichés del cine de acción de la época, la película se sostiene gracias a su ritmo constante, una banda sonora sumamente enérgica y un nivel de detalle en sus primeros planos que la convierte en una pieza de colección muy disfrutable para comprender el impacto cultural de los juegos de peleas en la última década del siglo XX.

I just got another package from Buyee. I've got everything on the cheap save for the Dirty Pair CD which cost more than the other four combined. I'm slowly doing accurate rips and scans of everything and I hope to be able to upload all this stuff to the Internet Archive by this summer.

Look at these beauties that have just arrived. I got all of them on Buyee for roughly 20€ each including handling fees, shipping and import taxes. The trick is buying several items over a period of less than 30 days and have them stuff everything into a single package. It saves a lot of money.

I'm trying to do some very high resolution scans of the Bubblegum Crisis OST covers and booklets, but it's hard because my scanner sucks and I have to stitch various bits together. This is the result scaled down from a 12k image. I need to find a way that takes less manual work.

I've been slowly collecting all the OST CDs from Bubblegum Crisis with the intent of doing accurate rips of each of them as well as high-quality scans of the covers and booklets.
I'm really fond of this show and part of the reason why I want to do this conservation work specifically is that the only way to listen to its soundtrack nowadays is via the "remastered" releases on streaming services which are absolute garbage. And I mean real dumpster fire. 🧵 1/3
