Story Pile: Zenshu
Most anime gets translated now, y’know?
The universalisation of the anime industry is so widespread, so common that when last year’s Girls Band Cry wasn’t simulcast in English globally, it was a genuine surprise. It was an unfamiliar feeling, but not a new one, rather, because back when I was a kid, as an anime fan, there was a lot of anime that didn’t get translated. Instead of a vast, all-encompassing machine, you had to hope for what was getting translated by the companies that could afford licensing and then manufacture and then distribution and then hire people to do the dubbing and translation and subtitling and all that, and then you had to hope that those businesses would last long enough and earn enough through sales of that product to make the money required to get to the end of the whole series.
Sometimes, they didn’t. That meant that a fan of anime in the 90s, in the early 00s too, before the widespread availability of high-speed internet and torrent culture, well before streaming, there was a chance you’d get invested in an anime from a video rental place or libary, and find the last episode was a point where the narrative stopped dead, without any final closure or explanation for what you’d spent all that time watching meant. It was a period of fandom defined by bad endings, vague explanations, and motifs that expressed that someone had an idea but nobody knew what that idea was.
Zenshu’s about that.
Spoiler Warning: I’m going to talk about the plot of the anime Zenshu. This is going to involve spoiling some of the events of Zenshu. There’s no noteworthy content warning beyond that Zenshu is an anime about an apocalyptic setting.

Just finished #zenshu about the power of art and the life of an artist.
Animation director chokes on lunch and is transported onto her favorite (tragic) anime.
Has the only animator magical girl transformation I've seen.
Recommended
P.s.
This scene gives you a hint of who her favorite animator is.

A really disappointing flipping of the script Zenshu
Seriously had high hopes for Zenshu, as it looked interesting. In fact, the concept is interesting, rewriting or flipping the script of your favourite show. Even changing the fate of characters that befalls them in the show. Sadly, there are issues as zenshu progressed. I had bit of a hard time really staying fully invested in post 3 episodes.
Studio: Mappa
First impression Previous Mini review
Season: Winter 2025
Episode: 12Positives:
Interesting start
Animation is top notch
Band maid does the OP, can’t go wrong with that
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZ9RRiy43j4
Nice little hark to well-known animators in the industry with their iconic drawings like gundam etc
Natsuko being shoved in to doing her drawing desk, there is a small bg music being played, repeating the name of the show, zenshu, I found that quite amusing
Natsuko being thought of as a gremlin at the start is actually quite amusing
Negatives:
Progressively gets bad after it continues on
Bare bones character development for the gang, understandably their fate was predestined, even with the interventions, they barely had any development
The romance between Luke and Natsuko is drier than a well in a desert
Unio can get annoying at times
Memmnel small story arc is interesting, sadly didn’t really go any further than what the movie said would happen
Pacing was meh
The director / bird reincarnated in her own film isn’t explained why she wants the movie to remain the way it is written
The story of overcoming or changing fate / destiny should be a positive, instead it made the whole process uninteresting, even felt dragged out
You can see partially how it would end; I suspected the ending would have Natsuko come back to reality or bring the perishing gang to her reality
Natusko change was predicable from the start: from being unapproachable, loner, to one who would accept help from people and be more happy / approachable
Grade:
E+

CW: Zenshu finale spoilers
You know, while at first I was disappointed that she went back to the real world and that the reunion was left as just a tease in the last 5 seconds... It kinda works regardless? Obviously I would love an OVA or a movie with them just chilling in the real world with Natsuko and losing their minds over stuff that doesn't exist in A Tale of Perishing. But if they never make something like that, ending it like this is fitting because we can just make our own sequel as fanfiction. Zenshu, given the plot, it's basically begging us for fanfics. We just need to all become Natsukos!

CW: Trivia: episode twelve of anime "Zenshu"
As a lot of audience noticed, Natsuko wrote the private message of love for the hero Luke in the sketch of the ideal image of him: "めちゃスキッ" (=I love you so much!)
The best figure of Luke for Natsuko is not the images of him in the movie, which were still imperfect and were broken fragilely, but his appearance she actually experienced in this isekai world in the episode eight. -

The building of Studio Kon-Kon in #zenshu is, oh, the previous main office of SUNRISE?

Having had the chance to finally see the finale... Zenshu is already a front runner for Anime of the Year 2025.

#Zenshu currently writing up the mini review for this massively disappointingly series. I missed it the first time around, but caught it the second time, see if you can spot it

2 months later, I should give an update on this.
I watched episode 1 before 2 had even aired, and then I stopped watching. Kind of. I hadn't "oficially" dropped it (whatever would make it "oficially dropped" to begin with?), but I didn't watch 2, 3, 4 etc. Well, I returned to it a day or two before episode 11 aired, and uhhh... I... may or may not have binged everything and watched 11 just a day after its release.
Fair to say I love Zenshu now :btr_nijika_heart:

El #anime #Zenshu está por terminar y me parece curioso que a estas alturas no se sepa quien está detrás de los enemigos principales. A menos que en realidad todos sean parte de una mente colmena o algo así. #FelizMiercoles a todos :3.

2 Winter Seasonal 2025 Disappointments
Yup the winter seasonal shows are coming to an end. As usual, I become frumpy and grumpy as to which two shows disappointed me for the winter season of 2025.
So, what are the two shows that disappointed me this time around.
Zenshu
Studio: Mappa
Episodes: 12
Despite me enjoying the series, I can’t help but feel underwhelmed by it. I did a first impression, whilst it showed promise, at first. As it went on, the characters aren’t gelling. The potential love chemistry between Natsuko and Luke is very dry, overall characters development in general is very lacklustre. Animation is top notch.

Unnamed Memory S2
Studio: Engi
Episodes: 12
I’ll keep this short. Which will be unusual for me. I’m very disappointed in unnamed memory S2. Engi didn’t improve, I’ve become uninterested in the series, however, will continue out of stubbornness and just to get it over and done with. God damn it Engi!

Going through Magic Knight Rayearth while watching Zenshu will make you notice VERY quickly where inspiration for the void monsters came from.

CW: Zenshu spoilers
Zenshu has been such a bright spot in an otherwise very dark period. I really love this show and what it's doing. And it's got so many brilliant details, like some of its references are rather obvious but others are not. Like the scene at the bar in which Luke asks Unio for advice concerning marriage which I'd say is a fairly subtle reference to the scene between Max and Hikaru in SDF Macross, spitting out drinks and all: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMKcUgd5LC4&t=331s

If you're into anime, and if you've been into it for a while, you really really want to watch Zenshu. This show is *amazing*. It's at the same time a love letter and a scathing critique of everything that's wrong with the medium. Plus several layers of social critique around it. But also a glorious piece of art and a feast for the eyes. Also brace yourself for references that are more than half a century old. Believe me, it's worth it.
