#question of the moment: for someone with minimal #microscope experience (e.g., used one a few times in middle school ~30 years ago) and looking to have fun with it with precocious elementary #child - what should I look for?
- Currently have a Tasco 1200x (ca. 1989) I picked up for a buck or two at a garage sale.
- Currently working on a #UI for #histology image management software and interested in learning more about the field outside writing software. -

"Virtue ethics is currently one of three major approaches in normative ethics. It may, initially, be identified as the one that emphasizes the virtues, or moral character, in contrast to the approach that emphasizes duties or rules (deontology) or that emphasizes the consequences of actions (consequentialism)."

okay, I may be slightly addicted to #Perlego. If you like (or do) more scholarly/academic #reading, you should check them out too. Publishers include the likes of @princetonupress, @Harvard University Press, @[email protected] get the idea.
I'm not going to share how large my "want to read" list on the site, it's slightly embarrassing. 😂

#question of the day: anyone familiar with resources on how #Alcoholics Anonymous and other #TwelveStep programs evolved out of the #OxfordGroups?
I finished reading a biography of Frank Buchman, who founded the Oxford Groups (an explicitly #Christian organization) and the relationship is discussed briefly.
According to the biography, the founders of AA were originally members of OG and the book portrays split as amicable.
I'd like to understand more deeply AA's roots and evolution

AFAIK there is no way to export a simple config of the #Ubiquiti #UniFi network #config.
I've worked around it by:
1. Downloading a backup
2. Using a third party decrypt script to convert backup to zip
3. Extracting files from zip
4. Using #Mongo Tools to convert #BSON to #JSON
5. Parsing in VSCBut it is freaking painful, especially the parts where JSON has been squished into string fields.
🤬! 🤬! 🤬!

I went to the #dentist yesterday. Apparently due to my #bruxism I have recessed in my teeth. In this case I had a filling in one of these recesses and a cavity formed around the filling.
They think they may be able to save the tooth (without a root canal), but can't tell for sure if the cavity has already reached the nerve.
I have an appointment to have a crown put on in a month, which kind of sucks. SIL.

I know, I know, this is horrible but sometimes I wonder what would happen if I didn't get x fixed by the #dentist and kind of let it molder on its own.
I have #bruxism so #teeth problems are my life.
Most recently something happened, I think a filling fell out, and there is a big hole in a tooth at the back of my mouth. It is sensitive to cold and has a dull ache sometimes and part of me wonders, "What would happen if I just left it?"
Yes, I have an appointment tomorrow, but still I wonder...

So, umm, #scribd isn't really unlimited #books...or even anywhere in the ballpark. Read on for the really shady story.
I recently finished a trial with #Perlego which I loved - but it was a few bucks more a month than #Scribd and doing some searches I saw Scribd had many of the same books, so I figured I'd give Scribd another try (it'd been a few years and they were offering me another 30 day free trial).
Everything seemed good at first, I was merrily adding books to my saved list and

has anyone used #Perlego? It's an alternative to #Scribd and #AmazonKindleUnlimited for #ebooks.
They only offer a 7 day trial but I was impressed by the quality and quantity of #books It's a tad on the expensive side comparatively ($18/mo.) but it includes a huge number of academic/professional books.
I'm on a 30 day trial of Scribd now (I've used it in the past, but it's been a few years) and am not nearly as impressed.

#question of the day: anyone familiar with a #browser #extension that allows one to allowlist other extensions on specific pages/domains? For example, if one wanted to turn off #Diigo (as I do) on #Perlego (perlego.com).

#question of the day (moment?): what #discussion #forum #software do you think is best? #Discourse? #Flarum? #SMF? #NodeBB? #MyBB? #phpbb?
I've personally been a fan of Discourse even though I think it's a bit of a beast and not always as intuitive as old school options - but curious to hear if anyone has found anything better?

#email #archives - how do you do it, if you do it? I've been using #MailStore for like forever.
I like to keep only my most current emails in my actual email account, everything else goes into the archives. It presents a neater division of materials for my messy mind.
I export all the emails as .eml files occasionally - in case something goes bad with MailStore's db (it's Firebird and maybe I just don't know enough about it, but I don't quite trust it).

so #gutters - the kind that you put on a #house to direct the rainwater careening down your roof. curious if anyone has thoughts? particularly interested in combining reasonable cost with eco-friendliness?
(some initial ponderings)
- Could I pipe the water from the gutters and create a small pond (like, really, really small)?
- Could I pipe the water into containers to use for watering the lawn?
- Should I get gutter covers to keep the leaves out? -
CW: Medieval (War) Movie
2/ casualties that are the most disturbing.
I'm unsure how #historical the story is besides the general historical context and some of the key players.
I generally do some reading on #Wikipedia and elsewhere after watching a historical film. After reading for a bit I walked away with two thoughts:
1. It sounds like Žižka ended up committing atrocities as well.
2. What did Jan #Huss think of the Hussites? He was executed before the full fledged wars.Have you seen it?

CW: Medieval (War) Movie
1/ last night I watched a #film with one of the most generic titles ever, "Medieval".
It's actually about Jan Žižka, a highly skilled military leader of the #Hussites - but before all of that fame.
It is, apparently, the most expensive #Czech film ever made. Somewhat surprisingly(?) the film is in English (Ben Foster, Sophie Lowe, and Michael Caine among the cast).
It is the most brutal #war film I can recall seeing.
The combat is gruesome, but it is the civilian

"Don't steal this book
For fear of life for I
Have got a big jack knife"- Miss Lilly Ingalls (of Norton Hill, Greene Co., NY), handwritten note in an 1850 copy of T. S. Arthur's Bell Martin.
(Over the years I have picked up a handful of older books, was paging through this one when I stumbled upon this inscription! 😂 )

#question of the day (#qotd?):
Most #SearchEngines have paid #APIs one can use to retrieve results but there are also #metasearch engines which seem to pull these results without paying for them (e.g., on the small scale, independent #seeks instances). I'm curious about the #legal issues surrounding metasearch. Who pays for the #API? And who uses other methods and why?
