Even a list of comparison sites would be helpful. Someone could then construct a #metasearch engine.

As our digital lives in the US become less stable and private, I wanted to figure out how to choose what search engine my browser uses.

I just added a new default search engine option for my Firefox on my MacBook (Mac OS).

1) add an extension to Firefox to allow me to add a different default search engine:

#FYI meta-search portal Metager.org is now charging for use. For now they are pitching it as a one-time payment;

...but until yesterday I had no reason to think there would be a payment, and the error message that informed me this morning of the change says;

"Token used up. Recharge now."

So you'll forgive my scepticism about the payment remaining one-time. I will be removing Metager from all my devices ASAP.

I couldn't believe it, I had to go checking out the source code, but it's real. They've really done it! A real, honest-to-goodness, open-source, first-class #searchEngine. No more shuffling #metaSearch engines that work half the time, pretty soon there'll be a diverse ecosystem of real, actual search engines! And they went and wrote it in #rust, too. Hell yeah.

I set up my own SeaRXNG and set it as my default search on all my devices. It’s not the fastest search setup, but should provide some decent quality and privacy. Yeah, it gets results from other search engines (it’s a meta-search), and the IP is associated to me. But that’s all they’ll get from me. There’s not really a good way around that anyway.

Worth noting that I’m comfortable hosting my own services, so this is relatively trivial to me.

Most #SearchEngines have paid #APIs one can use to retrieve results but there are also #metasearch engines which seem to pull these results without paying for them (e.g., on the small scale, independent #seeks instances). I'm curious about the #legal issues surrounding metasearch. Who pays for the #API? And who uses other methods and why?
