  8. I’ve just updated my iPhone mini and iPad from iOS 18 to 27. The transparency is largely mitigated but the bouncy animations are still a problem. They make the UI feel slow, the constant shape changing makes it harder to follow the controls and movement happening all over the screen is distracting and confusing. As we see the big picture, we might we might spare a thought for Ulugh Beg; he died on this date in 1449. Probably the greatest scientist in Mongolia’s history, Beg was a Timurid ruler and sultan, a mathematician, and the greatest astronomer of his time. In his observatory at Samarkand he discovered a number of errors in the computations of the 2nd-century Alexandrian astronomer Ptolemy, whose figures were still being used; his star map (of 994 stars) was the first since Hipparchus‘ (c. 135 BCE).
