  1. Fuller mix - added bass (I got blisters on my fingers) and perc, which is me playing a riq incorrectly, and then moved the gain and balance around.

I'm pretty happy with the "strat" in this, though I still haven't seen the light with them. I need to play in a big room at drummer levels. This was position 2 with a tube screamer (drive at 2 o'clock) into a 40w fender with the volume at about 1.75. Sounds better with a mix to cut through.

  2. Rough cut - I may add tracks to it, but this is basically live-to-computer.

  3. Still working on strat appreciation on my $50/used strat copy.
I leveled and crowned a high spot on the 19th fret that was making it fret out on bends, shined up the frets and put on a new set of 9s.

    I dunno.

Position 2 is kinda good with a phaser. 3 is fun with some grit or fuzz, and maybe the tone backed off a notch.

Going to play along with Lofi for a while.

  4. Meet the Lizurd!

With Fender being proper assholes right now, I spent the last few weeks going all over town trying out SGs and Les Pauls. I quickly found I have a strong preference for the the SG neck profile, as well as the way the body sits and aligns with my body. The selection of SGs was surprisingly limited across 6 Guitar Centers and a couple local shops. I found basically everything about the Gibson superior to the Epiphone. Eventually landed on the '61 Standard in Translucent Teal.

My first car was a '74 Datsun 260z, in emerald green, with a custom license plate. So this finish really connected with me. I usually go for a classic burst style (tobacco, bourbon, iced tea) so it's nice to add a little variety in the collection.

Fully intend to replace the tuners. I have Graph Tech locking ratio tuners on my Epiphone 335, probably stick with those on this.

  5. So, I had a perhaps-unhealthy thought. Does anyone have any experience with the Ibanez miKro GSRM20 basses? They're super short-scale (26.5-inch) bass guitars aimed at the small-handed beginner market. I played a couple in stores a few years ago as curiosities and thought they were cheap (tuners, etc.) but the fit-and-finish level was surprisingly good.

One's being offered used nearby. My thought is to set it up as a "piccolo bass," tuned A-C-G-C or G-C-F-Bb.

On bass I've never been a bottom-dweller who picks the lowest possible routes for basslines, and I've always liked the idea of a high-tuned bass with a honky P-bass pickup. Have I lost my mind?

  6. Not cool. No reading. It should read around 14Ω. And this is a speaker that's barely worn in, not an original, a reissue. The moulded, battered, old and original speakers hold up way better. Makes me weary of buying another reissue. This is the second reissue that fails on me.

  7. Fixing up one of my old London City cabinets. Replaced the speaker jack, stuck on a tag with specifications and glued numerous pieces of tolex back on. These Celestion speakers used to be a big part of my sound, G12H30s and then the 55 hz version. A London City DEA130 amp, an SG with P90s and an Ibanez Mostortion made up for the rest of it.

  8. Attempted music, with Alison - Eurithmics - She's Invisible Now.

They had an album before Sweet Dreams, called In the Garden. This is one from that.

  9. Yep. Definitely prefer the #Gibson burstbucker pickups over the #Epiphone probuckers on the SGs. But at a third the price for Epiphone, a pickup upgrade would still come in well under the cost of the Gibson. But I am going to sell my USA Strat, so it'd be nice to replace it with another USA-made #guitar. Ugh. Sucks to have GAS.

  10. So yesterday I decided to see how a capture sounds, to see if it would be viable to just use the for say fly dates.

I captured my main rhythm sound on the IRX a couple of times, adjusting the signal gain going into the NC, until the results were free of artifacts. Each capture sounded subtly different—not sure why—but in the end it is insanely good. (1/6)

  11. Went to my local #GuitarCenter to try out some #Epiphone Les Pauls and SGs. Every fret board felt super dry and the strings all felt nasty. Both fixable things .. but still makes it hard to be excited about any of them. Definitely prefer the thinner SG necks these days. And the position of the pickup switch, too. Though the cable jack location was not very practical with the Mustang Micro I was playing through. And I have to say, bringing a headphone amp with a couple of signal chains saved and a suite of songs to play is a great way to compare guitars. Certainly easier than lugging my whole pedal board and hoping the have my same amp! And with headphones on I'm zoned into myself in spite of all the other customers cranking amps in the store.

Managed to find a shop 90 minutes away that has the Guild Polara Deluxe, so I'll be making that drive on Saturday.
