  1. @khenderick @nohn I agree with that. I was mostly trying to holistically address responses to my original post. 🙂

I think that buying 100% renewable electricity (through available methods) and understanding CO2 intensity of what our actual supply is are both useful as sensors/inputs to #HomeAssistant and the #EnergyDashboard. They can help us both account for and alter our behaviors.

  4. @khenderick @nohn Also agree that the energy on the net isn’t 100% green. However, in my case, with my state’s energy choice program, I’m at least putting our money as directly as possible towards the purchase/support of production ( / ) on a kWh-per-kWh basis.

Support for this in the could help drive adoption in places where this kind of energy choice exists.

Conservation is a separate — but very much related — issue.

  9. @nohn Hard disagree. I can either buy electricity via my local utility and accept their energy production mix, or I can purchase the same electricity through a provider that is itself purchasing renewable energy certificates (RECs) on the market. Yes, that is an offset. One of those two ways supports 100% renewable energy to cover our usage. Ideal? No. Practical? Yes.

    It’s also a signal to my utility/PUC.

should account for purchase of somehow.

  14. Is there a way to tell the that I’m using 100% — such as through the kind of power choice options some US states have — rather the default mix provided by the ? I haven’t figured out a way.

  19. I’d like to build an device for data collection/display during an extended .

    Ideas
    1. powered normally via /
    2. support second power source with AA/AAA battery backup: obtained easily, replaceable, no recharging
    3. collect from cheap/common (i.e. temp)
    4. does not require a network (i.e. network down in power outage)
    5. store data when is not available
    6. upload data later
    7. show information on a local

  25. @rtyler I use the , which is under $10. Direct: dfrobot.com/product-1590.html Quicker US availability from at: digikey.com/short/wb8tj530 There are other options, including models with USB-C. If you don’t want to solder, cabling plus DFRobot sensors works. Worth checking out.

  26. @rtyler I’d have to look at the BOM, but I think all of my ESP32s with basic temp/humidity sensors have been under than price — even given the relatively high price for cabling — minus a fancy case and power source. I’ve repurposed leftover plastic containers with lids from the grocery store as cases, and just about any USB-A power adapter works. I run them with .

  27. I can't recall a time when Command-Tab didn't work for me in macOS, minus issues with an active Bluetooth mouse left in my laptop bag. It happened tonight, the keyboard shortcut didn't do anything until I logged out and back in.

  28. I’m on Team Storage with @ismh as I’m listening to Connected’s “I Like Clock” ep. overcast.fm/+FXx4OZ0qI/58:05

This segment feels like the @tbridge intervention on one of our sessions when I brought up MBP storage prices / limitations and the failings of File Provider / file sync when it comes to expandable storage.

  29. I would really like to know what happened to Unbound DNS or my home network yesterday during this time.

I was using Quad9 with DNS over TLS as my upstream DNS provider.

    Symptoms:
    - Some internal and outbound connections continued to work, I could still load and reload some Web sites
    - Other internal and outbound connections failed, mostly with DNS failures/timeouts
    - Affected Macs (home and work), HomePod minis (streaming stopped)

  30. @jamesthomson Apparently they now have some integrations with VTTs and D&D Beyond. ( user on macOS, myself.) Only heard about it after the site was nominated for the Ennie Awards. Seems great for more lightweight online and/or in-person games, especially for a youth game club (since no account is required).
