  1. I really hate the way the web version of Mastodon has changed the way it deals with white space (condensing everything to a single space), like HTML. This update should definitely be reverted asap.

  2. When Israel consistently scores high in the Eurovision voting (second this year, apparently), I think it’s impossible to ignore the reality that the Netanyahu Government is investing heavily in distorting the results. That in itself should be reason enough to ban Israel from the competition.

We’re restricting children’s access to the Internet so that TechBros’ platforms can run amok with no regulation.

The sad thing is that every time the BBC publishes an article like this it loses just a little more of the trust and respect it once had, and the UK’s soft power is yet further eroded, too.

  14. My partner is currently fighting the crazy world of AQA GCSE past papers for English Language for her daughter. All the papers are incomplete for ‘copyright reasons’ — the passages and pictures on which the questions are based are mostly missing.
    How is this farce acceptable?

I hope we will have polling stations set up in Sixth-form and FE colleges, to encourage voting in that demographic.

  16. @iandunt.bsky.social
Conspicuous by its absence is any mention of electoral reform.
The biggest reason for lack of trust in our democracy is the massive numbers of votes which are pointless, in the modern equivalent of rotten boroughs. A new approach to voting is essential. What’s good enough for mayoral elections should be good enough for Westminster elections too.

Potentially two good additions to the team (not least because Brown’s grip on the way money works is streets ahead of Reeves’ understanding), but as a way to address Starmer’s problems it’s a total #MissingThePoint.

  18. We need a suitably offensive antonym for ‘woke’. I propose ‘dozy’.

As an I T professional with fifty years experience, I came here to say exactly that. It’s bizarre that faced with concrete evidence that the system has exactly “lost, stolen or tampered with” this woman’s digital status, they still say “there are no wider issues around the system”.
I fear we are at the beginning or another Post Office Horizon scandal.

  21. For the first time, I find myself critical of the Junior Doctors. There is no way that the Government can make any commitments before the election, nor should they. What will the strike achieve apart from disruption?

  22. I’m trying to persuade my brother to take Covid precautions more seriously. He asked the very sensible question “what proportion of long covid sufferers have symptoms that affect their ability to work?”
Can anyone offer links to studies which address this question?

  24. @urlyman
All of this reinforces my belief that we should be putting far more effort into energy demand reduction. For example, we’ve had the technology to produce housing that needs little or no energy input for decades; it’s a scandal that we’re still building dwellings with massive energy bills.

Personally I would love to see Israel returned to its pre-1967 borders, with its security guaranteed by international forces, and severe economic sanctions applied if it ever tried expansionism again. #NotGoingToHappen

  26. @ChrisMayLA6 @SusiArnott
There are two things we could do to totally transform the UK.
    1. Electoral reform. Starmer’s biggest failure is not using his huge majority to get that sorted.
    2. A law criminalising ’deliberately or recklessly misleading the public’. We have to get truth back into politics and public discourse. If electors don’t know the truth, their votes are meaningless and democracy is dead.
Everything else we need to do follows from those two changes.

  27. @GottaLaff This is all because #Merchan postponed the original sentencing date. That looked like a cowardly act.

  28. Terrifyingly, Rachel Reeves seems to be in favour of PFI for NHS projects. This is proof that she is not competent to run a bath, let alone the UK fisc.
