  1. I'm beginning to understand why Evil Big Tech has such a stranglehold on the software we use.

I've been thinking it would be nice to ditch Google Maps Timeline and use a non-evil alternative instead.

After a little bit of looking around, it seemed that PhoneTrack and its Nextcloud integration might do what I need.

Well, maybe it does, but after spending a large chunk of yesterday faffing around with it, I haven't got it to work yet.

  3. "Hundreds of illegal waste tips operating in England - including 11 'super sites'"

The government could stop this overnight if they wanted to: just make it free to dispose of rubbish at licensed local authority sites.

Or at least cut the prices to the point where it's not worth the risk of dumping rubbish illegally.

But I don't suppose they'll do that, because they hate the thought of services being run for social benefit rather than profit.

It's bonkers that being an obvious racist doesn't breach any Parliamentary rules, but calling someone a racist after they have shown themselves to be an obvious racist does breach the rules.

But chapeau to Dawn Butler for the way she withdrew the remark:

"so I will withdraw the fact that I am referring to the Member of Parliament as a racist because of her racist comments"

  5. CW: Deaths in the English Channel

I've just written to my MP to make clear I think people dying in the English Channel is completely unacceptable, and that the government really needs to create safe and legal routes to claim asylum in the UK.

My MP is a Tory so almost certainly doesn't care, but one can but try.

  6. Can anyone recommend a good place to look for sofas? Looking for something that's a good step up in quality from the mass market stuff like DFS, but ideally without spending an absolute fortune

Had a look at "Sofas & Stuff" the other day, and their sofas look lovely, but they are f***ing expensive.

Wondering if there's a sweet spot somewhere in the middle or if you really do have to pay those sorts of prices for good quality?

So, all those various government ministers who were wheeled out onto the TV and radio yesterday like Mel Stride to defend the government's position that Hester's racist remarks were not racist:

What I would love to see (but obviously won't because our media are way too supine) would be for them all to be invited back today and asked to explain why Sunak was wrong to say later on yesterday that Hester's racist remarks were indeed racist.

I'm not saying I'll never vote Labour again. Maybe I will some day.

But honestly, at this stage in the game, I cannot possibly see myself voting Labour while #Starmer still runs the show, no matter what he says or does now. It just all seems too far gone.

Labour really need to ditch him, and fast, if they want to save the party from oblivion.

"Labour says the policy draws a clear dividing line between the government and Reform UK"

You know what would draw an even clearer line between the government and Reform UK?

Not being horrible to foreigners the whole bloody time.

Why on earth do migrants have to "volunteer in their community"? How many native Brits do that?

    "in migration cases"???

You would have hoped that Starmer, as allegedly a former human rights lawyer, would understand that human rights apply to all humans in all circumstances. Not just to white people.

I wonder if that's really true, or if he's just the first foreigner they managed to round up, and he made that admission after the electrodes on his genitals were turned up to 11?

  16. I may be going on a business trip to Lisbon next month.

Still hoping to keep up my plan for taking the train instead of flying, and I figured if I can take the train to Riga, then how hard can it be to get to Lisbon?

It's dead easy to get from London to Madrid by train. Doing the last stretch from Madrid to Lisbon turns out to be way more complicated than you could possibly imagine. Basically a whole day's travelling. This makes me sad.

  17. I watched Wicked 2 last night. Very highly recommended. Gripping throughout, with really beautiful cinematography, especially the cheerful bright colours of Munchkinland.

And both Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have amazingly beautiful voices.

    Also surprisingly topical.

  19. It's not immediately obvious to me that scrapping jury trials will clear the court backlog.

What is obvious to me, however, is that scrapping jury trials will make it much easier to secure convictions of people accused of breaking crazy authoritarian laws that no group of 12 reasonable people would ever agree should be illegal in the first place, like peacefully holding up a placard.

I wonder what the government's main motivation is here?

  20. Why do you think the UK government is proposing to end jury trials for most offences?

A: It's a sensible move which will streamline the justice system

B: They know perfectly well that no jury would ever convict a granny for sitting peacefully while holding a placard and they want to lock up more grannies

I'm glad they've called it "National Conservatism" just to clarify what they're all about, because conservatism is obviously very different to socialism so, just in case you were in doubt, "National Conservatism" is clearly nothing at all like "National Socialism"
